THIS IS NOT AN OS WAR THREAD

I have made the full-time switch to a Mac. I have ALWAYS used a Mac, and always will. I just find them easier to use, as i prefer to drive manual, left hand drive cars. We all have our preferences, and Mac is Mine.

I have Market Samurai loaded, as it runs on adobe AiR, but i have to use my wifes Win7 Notebook to run 90% of my programs, as they are all windows executables.

My question is, what programs do you use, that are Mac native or run on platforms like Adobe AiR, that you find helpful to internet marketing??

I know i can run bootcamp, with windows or use software like vmware or paralells, but my point is i DONT want to run windows, period. I hate it like bp hates oil spills......

Peace

I am also a Mac user and was using a Mac exclusively when I began internet marketing. At first I could do everything on my Mac, but I was mainly working on article marketing and simple keyword research.

When I wanted to venture into some other areas, I was hit with a cold reality. Most of the best software (for IMing) is only for the PC. I was forced to get VMware so that I could grow my business with the software that was being recommended.

But as a Mac purist, I did not (and still do not) enjoy that user experience. So I ended up purchasing a PC and have the computers side by side. The perfect solution for me (to have everything run on a Mac, free from MS Windows) is non-existent.

So the question is...how badly do you need to run those PC-only apps?

One other thing, I have to confess that I really do enjoy Windows 7. It is by far the best PC experience I have ever had.

Mac boy here too! I have a couple PC's here and a few Mac's. I work almost exclusively on my mac and rarely on my pc's. In fact I hate working on my pc's.

You can always just install windows through bootcamp of course, but me personally I don't want MS software anywhere near my hardware.

This is why i wanted to ask fellow warriors, i too HATE bootcamp, the idea of running windows is annoying.

I agree with dwinland in that Win7 is BY FAR the best windows EVER, and i do enjoy using it, but i am MUCH more efficient in using Mac, i am used to it.

I have decided in the last hour to get all the spare parts out of my garage and build a win7 machine, Ther are certain applications that I am enjoying running, and help me A lot to expand my business, and it is getting to the point where I need to keep expanding, so i shall just build a Win 7 PC, to run NEXT to my Mac (so as not to infect it )

What software do fellow warrior Mac fanboys use though? As a point of reference of sorts, for myself and other users.

Goodluck. Winhoes has a stranglehold on everything. I'm currently using most of my apps on the kids Win7 box until I get paralells up on my ibook. I yet to see any SEO related tools that were made for the Mac OS.

The good thing is I do have a desktop PC, so I'll go there if I have any problems. But I would love to do it all on my Macbook Pro.

I just gotten my mac too and my mac are mostly used for video creation purposes. And that's the main reason why I bought a mac. But now it's so cool that i'm moving everything to mac!

MS, keynote, pages, imovies, screenflow are some of the great software I'm using! Perhaps getting final cut pro!

Can we do this the other way around?

Give us a list of PC only apps and we'll give you a list of Mac comparable apps wherever possible.

There's a bunch of recent threads about using Macs for IM if you hit the search function. No point in repeating it here.

But if you (and other) folks will list the PC software they can't live without, I'll bet the Mac users here can give them some great alternatives.

Makes the thread much more useful, IMO.

    Best,

    Brian

I agree with Brian. We need specific apps listed to be able to tell where the Macintosh is lacking.

Most of the problems come from a lack of Internet marketing specific programs. For example, senuke, scrape box, all of the incansoft bots, traffic travis and micro-niche finder. In short, most of my automation software is not available on the Macintosh (sigh!).

Like others, I believe that the Mac can do just about everything else that PC can, and sometimes even better (especially video).

Until Apple is able to take over the world, I suppose that I am stuck using a PC for some of my Internet marketing tasks.

      To your success,

        Parallels.

This is better than bootcamp because you do not have to reboot to switch the machine from Mac OSX to Windows OS. I run Parallels all day long on my iMac and both OS's work at the same time.

I would also point out though there are are only a few Windows programs that I actually need. One of the reasons I use Parallels is because I load and use video files that were originally recorded using Camtasia. Now I prefer screenflow so much more that Camtasia I will run the files in a Camtasia project and screen-capture them again using Screenflow, via Parallels. Might sound confusing but it actually expedites my video production.

Other than that, I could get along just fine with only MAC OSX, and not worry too much about what Windows software I cannot run.

I also use Parallels and it runs Windows apps really well.

Icansoft bots, The Best Spinner, Domain Punch Pro all run smoothly and are fairly well integrated.

Opera Browser is my secret weapon for lightning fast surfing and searching. My favourite feature is that any search box on any site can be called up by typing in a selected letter in the address bar.

            For example:
If I type "g hedgehog" in my address bar, I will see a google result "for hedgehog"
If I type "yt hedgehog", I'll get the YouTube result.
"am hedgehog" - Amazon result... and so on..

I also use Dreamweaver, Coda, Firefox, Dropbox, Photoshop etc..

My current office setup is a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a machine running Windows 7. The Mac Pro is the "main" machine with two monitors and the Windows 7 machine is to the right of that -- all three screens are together and are connected seamlessly with a single mouse and keyboard using the excellent Synergy software.

I'm not a "fanboy" for either platform, I just use each as needed to get the job done. There are advantages to each one and I take advantage of as much as I can from both. For example, Quickbooks and Office just can't be beat on Windows. Certainly some will disagree, but I believe that Excel 2007, and now 2010, put Excel 2008 to shame, as do similar versions of Word and Powerpoint. Then there are all of the marketing-specific programs that see infrequent use but work fantastically (shout out to Big Mike).

You asked about Mac software though, and one thing that I couldn't live without is the excellent 1Password software. They now have a basic client for Windows, so by using a network share or Dropbox you can easily keep track of passwords and use them automatically from Windows or OS X.

Pages is another incredible program. Use this for publishing ebooks instead of Word. They'll look ten times better and it will be ten times easier to get everything right.

One of the main reasons I use the Mac for a main machine is that I've been able to run a reasonably paperless office with my Fujitsu Scansnap scanner, Automator, and Hazel. Spotlight is excellent for searching through scanned and OCRd PDFs, and Finder's Coverflow mode is just incredible for quickly searching visually through a folder of PDFs quickly. I haven't found software on Windows that comes close to this, and I've messed around with quite a bit of it.

Having a true bash shell (without the use of programs like Cygwin) is nice to. Having a proper SSH, ruby interpreter, and the entire bash ecosystem is something that I really appreciate. PuTTY on Windows does the trick in a pinch, but it's not the same.

If you do any sort of PHP programming or even just HTML/CSS hacking, Coda from Panic Software is your friend. I don't think there is anything comparable on Windows, especially when you consider that it runs TextMate bundles.

Speaking of TextMate, this is my favorite editor. It's infinitely extensible and wields a lot of power. Some time back I posted an article spinner that I put together for TextMate: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-textmate.html.

Finally, one program that gets overlooked but that I love is called MailPlane. It's basically a Mac OS X wrapper for GMail, but it does several things that I find useful. First, it keeps all of your logins in one place, and allows you to quickly switch between accounts. I have many gmail accounts and this makes it a snap to manage them all. Also, it can stay logged in to multiple accounts at once and monitor them for new messages. There's nothing like it for Windows, I wish there was.

I use quite a few more apps than I've mentioned here, but this post is already long enough. Good luck!

    Screenflow
    Tweetie
    Skype
    Market Samurai
Transmit (their newest version, I think 4.0, is SICK. Seriously, it's damn good. It also has S3. If you want S3 separate, get s3Hub)
    iWork
    Mindnode Pro
    Handbrake
    Paparazzi
Firefox (it's a tad too unstable though)
    Photoshop CS5
    Aftereffects CS5
Coda (Best in its league, considerably better than anything else I've used)
    Mailplane
    Speed Download
    1password

    And don't forget... DROPBOX!!

I've played with a lot of apps (both paid and free) and settled with those.

I've been sticking on Mac as well since I moved to it but I also recently have used PC. The ones that I use that allow me to utilize my Internet Marketing needs thru my Macbook are Seesmic Desktop, Skype Recorder (for interviews), Screenflow, LastPass, Audacity, Market Samurai, Dropbox, etc. all of which I don't have to switch on PC for some apps.

    Hey

I am also a Mac user since this March, and will always be. (I LOVE IT).

I know you don't want to use Windows, but accept it, most of the apps (not only IM apps) are Windows compatible, and have no Mac version.

I have bought Parallels, and installed Win 7 on it, and run both OSs simultaneously without any problems.

Thanks for starting things off. Mac man here, but I am facing the reality that almost every darn cool tool, software, (some) WSO is another made-for-PC deal. Personally, I can't fight it. I know to stay ahead of the game I need these tools, software etc...so its either Parallels or buy a PC (which not an option at the moment) plus Windows 7. I think what's stopping me is perhaps a mindset issue - the feeling that I am crossing over to 'the other side' and my Mac might get contaminated or something. Somebody in the forum is probably dying to say to me, "do you want to be right or be making money".

Just thought I'd chime in because I didn't hear anyone mention Virtual Box. It's a free and open source alternative to Parallels (and the like). I've been running Windows 7 on it for a couple of weeks now and I'm really happy with it. I don't use all that much, just to check browser compatibility.

Thank goodness someone mentioned it... I was just at the point of despairing. :p

I've been happily running Virtual Box for a while now with no issues at all. Much easier than restarting to boot into Windows through Boot Camp, and free unlike Parallels, and easier to use than CrossOver. I've found it the absolute best way to run Windows on a Mac.

      ...did I mention it's free?
