Citations for local listings

Guys, I know that citations play a large role in getting a local listing ranked well in the maps. What I am wondering is if anyone has tested doing citations on websites that are not local directories. For example has anyone tested doing citations on blogs, forums, websites, social media, etc?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated as I am going to be testing in the next couple days. What I am curious about is how you get a listing ranked for certain keywords. I mean with usual seo you can use anchor text with the keywords, but with citations you can't do that.

I am thinking that I can create citations on all kinds of different websites where I usually creates links for seo. This will make it much easier for me then creating citations on the local directories.

      Hi RocketGuy,

Local Maps is always undergoing changes, and I can see where you'd think citations would help all across the board. In a way, I'd say that mentioning your biz citation probably can help on other blogs, but I would still stick to local community blogs if you're going to do this. This way, you can also get the anchor text backlink as well as your citation most of the time, so nothing is really wasted.

If you just go out blasting citations all over the web, don't expect much. They are looking for local relationships/"popularity" with citations. Regardless though, I would not skip out on the local vertical directories as I've had success using them TONS of times. Between the local directory listings, filling out a great descriptive "Places" page, and some consistent reviews, you should move upwards in the local listings. Hope that helps.

That was what I was afraid to hear. I was hoping I could just create citations on regular sites, but I guess I might have to do it on the local directories only.

They are a lot more effective in Bing and Yahoo than Google. Having said that, just like 'no follow' links, they seem to have more impact than the zero effect Google wants you to think they have.

          Hope that makes sense!

I understand what you are saying. I think it will just come down to testing.
