Running your IM Business on figurative Diesel Fuel or Gasoline?

No, I am not talking about cars. I am talking about your online business.

I recently climbed/hiked up a mountain peak I had conquered three times previously in the beautiful mountain country of Idaho. I was reminded of the first time I had done this strenuous hike by my boss at the time who had taken a group of us up there. I was only 16 years old and I guess (I do not remember saying this, but my old boss whom we will call "Martin" said I did) I told some of my fellow staff that I would beat the old man Martin up the peak.

Now, conquering this peak is no easy feat. Of course it's just hiking, no climbing gear involved. But it's a steep hike, ascending over 2000 feet in elevation and every step up once you get close to the top is fairly difficult.

Martin liked to always tell us to work on diesel fuel, rather than gasoline. He meant that if you work slow and steady (like diesel fuel fire burns), you will not burn out because our job (working at summer resort) was quite demanding. If you worked too fast and too hard and stayed up late every night you would burn out quick, like a gasoline fire burns.

So I was scaling this peak as fast as I could to beat Martin up the peak. Martin heard from some other staff my challenge to him, and thought, "Ok, I will just climb slow and steady: diesel fuel." About 3/4 of the way up, he could see me a few hundred feet above him. About 7/8 of the way up as I was stopped for a minute sucking air, he passed me saying, "See ya sucker" with a good natured laugh.

See what I did? I tried to run on gasoline, going fast but burning out quick. Martin, with diesel fuel power, triumphed in the end and was able to keep going.

In your online business, you can use diesel fuel, or gasoline. My advice. Do not run on gasoline. Don't start out with IM by trying to work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. Work hard, yes. Maybe 6 days every now and then. Don't be lazy. But work 40-50 hours week, max. Some people may be able to work more or less. But don't push it too hard. You will burn out, and especially as it can be harder to make those big commissions in the beginning you may get discouraged in your stressed and tired state if you are not seeing a reward for your efforts.

Hope this can be a reminder for some. Use diesel fuel.

When I started out, I guess I was using gasoline, because I was literally doing 15 hours on my business every day! I got burnt out, so I started to take things a little slowly and steadily, and thank goodness for that, now I am able to reap the benefits from that. Great post anyway!

  • I also worked on gasoline (12+ hours a day) in my first year of IM... It worked as I made good money and it helped me taking off, but it took a personal toll. Now a days I work on diesel and I prefer it, but then again I am more knowledgeable and efficient as a business manager.

Working on diesel is all about time management and efficiency, but it's the only way to go forward in the long run.

Yes, thanks for that last line. Totally true.

You need to work on diesel most of the time, I think, but in order to do it effectively time management is also a big key.

If you do not manage your time effectively, you will not get as much done, take longer to finish projects, and thus not make as much money as you could, in the end.
