I have recently completed my first eBook, which I am hoping to put on sale soon. However, I am still a bit confused about the process. This is what I understand so far:

- You have to have a website that includes a link to download the product (which is no problem to do)

- I have decided to use paypal to process the purchases

- I then have to send the customer to the download page

I keep reading that you have to make a secure page, so that not just anyone can get to. Any advice or suggestions about how to go about selling my first eBook?

Thanks

  • Well twigman 1200,

you can achieve two important things here if you want to - generate a list and make some money longer term.

What you could do is have a squeeze page with an optin form, when people enter name and email they see a thankyou page which thanks them and asks them to confirm their request via their email and when they confirm they end up at the download page.

Now at this stage you could offer them your ebook as a free gift, or you could have another free gift and sell the eBook.

You see I have been taught that if you intend to develop a large, long term business, then building a list of people who are targetted and who get to know you is vital.

I guess it is a choice between short term gain repeating the offers or longer term gain where you develop a big list of people who like you.

    Hey, hope this helps.

What type of conversion rate do you typically see on an email list? I know it depends on how well targeted the list is and the product and everything, but assuming averages, what kind of conversion do you see?

Some shopping cart services offer temporary download pages that are custom-created when someone makes a purchase, then deletes itself when the buyer downloads the ebook.

I'm not sure if Paypal offers that service or not...

What you might try (and this would help with the list building strategy mentioned above) is this: When someone orders, send the ebook to their inbox. You could set up Paypal to work with an auto responder service, and once they enter their address and make the payment, the first "auto response" is an email with the PDF attached.

    Just an idea...

      Bad idea
      1. Paypal doesn't offer secure download link.

      2. (this is the bad one!) - I would kill any seller if they send me over a 36MB freaking big PDF file...
Hey, don't listen to this advice. All you potential customers would hate you for a lifetime!

It's important to know exactly what you're selling. Answer these questions before you start, and you'll avoid problems later such as disatisfied customers, and requests for refunds.
    • Are you selling the downloadable E-Book - or - are you going to going to allow people some level of access before they buy?

You could for example allow people to download the E-Book before paying, read part of it, and then either pay to download part two, or get a password to read a second part.
    • What rights do your customers get?

Is the E-Book just for their personal use - or - can they sell or transfer their copy of the E-Book to other people?
    • How are you going to deliver the product? Over the Internet (as a download), or will you ship media (disks, CD-ROMs etc.) to your customers.
    • What guarantees do you offer your customers?
    • What level of support do you offer your customers?

Start selling it first - you can always invest in making it more secure later. That way you know if the market wants it and is prepared to pay for it before ploughing more time and money into the project.

Lots and lots of good product creators don't do anything to protect their digital products - I'm guessin because they think they're time is better spent marketing the product (or creating a new one).

I know you can also get software where you email a download link that expires after x many hours.

I thought I also have to recommend a guide for you to sell that first e-book and the best guide that I've read so far was from Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income blog. You may want to visit his website here and look for his e-books guide: Passive Income: The Smart Passive Income Blog

    I hope this helps!
