Same # for multiple Google Places?

Hey guys,

Can I use the same phone number for multiple listings in Google Places?

Is this ethical - set up a Google Places account for someone else to get them in first place, and, I don't live in that city, so later I can turn around and get it transferred over to them?

Places doesn't like a number that doesn't ring the secretary at the business, it'll catch up with you eventually.

It's part of their way of proving it's a real business...if all the other scraped listings from all the multitudes of directories don't match the number, well, conventional wisdom dictates they'll get suspicious.

does that make sense, long day?

Steve is correct Jeremy. It will be near impossible to have it rank first because the phone # is a top 10 ranking factor. It won't be area code correct or match business data aggregators.

Just have them verify the listing for you with the correct phone # and then go to work on it.

An excerpt from an upcoming report of mine...

Phone: Use a local number within the area code of your business and not an 800 number or an answering service. This should be the number that your secretary or office person answers when customers call. If you only have a cell number you can use it here but otherwise save it and add it later on in the optional information.

Also, consider all the places that your phone number may already exist on the web, if one place has (xxx) 555-1212 and you list it as xxx 555-1212 the spiders will not see the match.

    likewise,
It's all about consistency, trust, and relevancy.

I had a guy contact our marketing firm recently asking if we could set up 5 - 10 place pages for each of his clients for different locations etc. What I told him (and have noticed myself as I run 2 businesses) is that Google eventually deactivates one of those place pages. If I'm not mistaken, that's something of an automated process to eliminate duplicate listings. So even if it lasts for a while, it will likely be deactivated soon and continue to be if you try and re-activate it.

I'm not sure how they get away with it here, but Canada Post has the 2 local stores showing the general 1-800 numbers. I've only seen that on those 2 stores though, other Canada Post offices seem to have their specific numbers. Maybe they will be marked as duplicates eventually though?

    I'm not sure.
