What is the best way to set up a shoppingcart?

I have never used a shoppingcart before so not sure where to start. I'm looking for something that is fairly easy to use and not too technical

Any ideas or recommendations as to what is the best way to set one up - without spending a fortune!

    Hi Sheryl

If you would consider using WordPress there is an excellent FREE shopping cart made by a New Zealand firm - WP eCommerce

WordPress e-Commerce Plugin a WordPress Shopping Cart Plugin by Instinct | Instinct Entertainment

I've used it before and it is very easy to set up.

Otherwise there is Magento, which is also a free product (stand alone, not WordPress). However it is far from easy to use, mainly because it has so many features and is actually an inventory and customer management system as well as a cart.

    Hope this helps.

Go Daddy has one too that's pretty user friendly. Not free though ($9.99) but affordable. Good luck.

Thanks Bill, I am actually using Wordpress so I will check that one out.

If that doesn't work I will check the GoDaddy one, thanks.

Do you actually need a shopping cart? What I mean is are people going to buy multiple items and pay for them in one go, or are you selling single item downloads? If so you could just use paypal buttons, or ejunkie.

Wow, I didn't even know about paypal buttons. Thanks!

Thanks Jazbo, I'm selling individual article packs so yes I can use an individual Paypal button for each one, which is what I'm going to start off doing I think. I would just like at some stage to put up a shoppingcart to make it easier if customers did want to buy more than one pack.

I like DLGuard, which I have for a product on another site. It is easy to use and setup, the only problem is the look of it and I have no idea how to personalize it with my own theme.

I use DLGuard and it wasn't too hard to customise the colours for the shopping cart, and change the text/categories. There's a guide in the DLGuard admin area. It's easy to add products, and if you've already got the script, you can use it on two domains.

Thanks Audrey - the only problem with DLGuard is the template. My site is the first one in my signature and I would love to be able to keep the site as it is, but just add a shoppingcart to it. I'm not sure if that would be possible though but that would be ideal.

I'm planning on doing the same thing, Sheryl, but with a product other than articles. I'm hoping to be able to keep a nice site header and a sidebar, and have the shopping cart in the middle.

When I get a spare minute (ha!) I'm going to go over to the DLGuard forums and see if it's possible and who might be able to do it for me. If you like I'll keep you informed.

Audrey that would be great if you could let me know. I tried to find if they had a forum but couldn't find one, do they have one?

Sheryl, go into your DLGuard admin area, and on the top right, click on "help for common questions". You'll come to a page with a list of faq, and right down along the bottom there is a menu, and one of the links is for the forum. When you go to the forum, there is a topic "need work done? or are you a contractor?". From that link you'll get to a place where you can outsource that sort of setup. There is a thread there, about integrating DLGuard into an existing website, and the guy has good feedback. I'm sure what we're thinking about can be done.

I don't think I'll get to my project for a week or two yet, but I'll keep you informed.

        Hope this helps. :-)

WordPress is great if you want a simple e-commerce store. I would use the others but WordPress is probably better now because there is much more support.

Oh, I tried that Wordpress plugin but it wasn't really what I was after. I really want something that will allow me to sell multiple products and be able to return my customer to the download page once they have purchased. I haven't come across one yet that will give them the download for all the products on one page, other than DLGuard.

How robust is WP eCommerce? How many items, concurrent users does it support?

    Thanks

You should look into a total online business platform such as Haiku Online Business which handles shopping cart, website, customer database and marketing features. It's a hosted solution so you don't have to worry about the technical stuff either. All the other bases are also integrated, such as the payment gateways, shipping modules etc., and you can even give your customers coupons and vouchers. It's an all in one solution so you don't need to juggle multiple systems.

Sheryl have a think about using E-Junkie and WordPress together.

The easy way is just to create a post for each product you want to sell then paste your E-Junkie "Add to Cart" and "View Cart" links into each one.

E-Junkie then handles all the cart functionality for you with a nice overlay that appears in front of whatever page you're on.

And of course it handles secure product delivery too.

You can then just concentrate on presenting your products well and you don't have to get into anything terribly complicated.

Plus you can use it with any theme in this way, or have a custom theme created to suit.

I actually used this approach to get a full setup going for a wedding bouquet designer and it worked out great.

Keeps everything quick and easy to work with.
