What works best regarding keyword variation in domain names?

I've had good success when I've been able to get my keyword as the domain name and doing common SEO things but most of the time the main keyword is taken.

Example if your domain name is taken in .com and .net is it better to add a word before the keyword or after the keyword or hyphens or what?

example: main keyword: dog training

dogtraining.com and dogtraining.net taken so what is next best?

bestdogtraining
dogtrainingsecrets
dog-training

I've heard a lot of theories but has anyone actually done any testing and can share real results not just hearsay?

Thanks, Ron

I would have answered if this was in the SEO forum. Seems like everyone posts everything in the general forum lately.

My understanding is try a .org if the .com and .net are gone

        and then hyphens after that.

I've seen the hyphens recommended (over prefixes) in a number of locations (Commission Blueprint, Niche Blitzkrieg, Market Samurai, ...)

I would go with dog-training.com I don't think Google penalizes for the hyphen. If you were to sell the site, a .com would be worth a little more than a .net or .org

If I were to add another word onto the main keyword I would add it at the end - so dogtrainingtips.com rather than tipsfordogtraining.com

Both ways still contain the main keyword phrase so I don't know if it makes a huge difference but I prefer to have the main keywords at the beginning if I can.
