Keywordk research frustration

I have seen some discussion here lately along the lines of inaccurate keyword research tools but want to clarify as I getting so frustrated picking loser keyword phrases lately.

I have used the new google tool, mnf, and just downloaded the trial version of market samauri. Seems like all three give different numbers, and in some cases substantial differences.

There's just nothing more frustrating to me lately to choose an exact match keyword phrase with 3000 searches in a month only to see very little traffic. Then research the phrase again a month later and see the searches are only 400. I just don't have that much hair to keep pulling out!

Any advice on this subject would be much appreciated.

I hear you! A few months ago I spent all my time and efforts building up a new niche around keywords that both Google and Micro Niche Finder reported as receiving between 6k - 4k local searches a month. Now, both those services return those same searches as being between 400 and too low to report.

Similarly, I've revisited a number of WSOs I've purchased and checked out the examples they used in their ebooks, only to see exactly the same results - searches they wrote about as getting around 5k monthly searches are all now now in the hundreds.

      Hi takeem,

I'm not a keyword "expert" but it's to my understanding that these tools are based on monthly searches and may alter depending what people are searching for on any given month...so you won't always see consistency.

As for comparing the different tools look to see that you are using the same search criteria. Some tools may take into account all search engine results while others may only rely on one search engine to get results. If you are going to do "exact" searches than make sure this is consistent with all tools within a given month.

Also may want to consider doing a broad search, most people won't use quotes when doing searches, so not sure if you are getting a true value with this method. I'm sure there's a reason, just haven't quite figured it out myself.

      Hope this makes sense...good luck!

The only accurate keyword tool - your own testing. Even Google keyword tool is highly inaccurate.

Instead of relying on these keyword tools, just do a ppc testing just for a day or 2. Test how many impressions and how many clicks u can roughly get. Once you done that, you would have a good idea of how much traffic is for the day. And with that, you can forecast the searches for the month.

Take note that search volume for keywords is different throughout the entire week. so you may need to test the keyword for a week.

Since keyword research is not an exact science. Test is very important.

I use the keyword research tool I trust the most (Market Samurai) to select the best keywords, get a keyword match domain, put up two pieces of content, and do some basic backing. Then see what happens with the sites over the next 3-4 weeks.

Based on the the traffic stats, and search engine ranking I then invest in additional content and back linking.

I am a keyword expert and I do use Google Keyword Tool

Just because a keyword might have 4k monthly searches...does not mean there are truely 4k searches per month...its based on an average and with everything there is an ebb and flow

I don't put as much stock in keyword researching as learning from stats.
Meaning, I'll obviously do keyword research in the beginning, but I create a lot of content with related keywords. Then you can check what's working and branch off in that direction.

I've recently downloaded the trial version of Market Saumari and I find it totally useless. When I do my kw search it only gives you a max of 100 results. With all due respect its a beautiful platform but useless, you need to get more results, at least the 800 limit you get directly from the Google kw tool. Following the instructions on the video by the time you apply all the filters to narrow down the keywords for your niche you end up with the original kw you started out with. Maybe these guys can work something out with Google where a subscription service similar to Wordtracker is offered.

For example in the videos the kw "dog training" is used. By the time you apply the filters you're left with the original word dog training. If you manipulate the filters you may get a couple more but not ones you would really want to use. I believe that the problem lies in that magic 108 number where Google cuts you off.

Bottom line, if sw developers like Market Samauri and Micro Niche Finder don't figure out how to get around the Google Search limitations I see these pieces of sw going in to an uninstall utility. That's where my trial version of Market Samauri is likely to end up. It's best not to even bother wasting anymore time with them, I've wasted a week staying up til 3AM. I finally figured out how to get around it but it's basically a lot of manual work using Google kw tool and another cheap little sw program that I've had for a couple of years that fills in the gaps of the info Google doesn't give you. Then plug-in everything into Excel and filtering out my desired kw there using Excel formulas. If you're lazy you can't do it because it takes lot's of time and patience which is what we're trying to save. Basically about 2 days to research a niche. I just put together a package of 4000 kw that I'll be going through tomorrow. First I have to merge all of them together because they are on 45 different worksheets, so it's about an hour of a lot of repetive C&P work. It's crazy but I'll get the results I want. Good luck.

PS. Maybe I'll give WordTRacker a shot at $60 bucks/month.
