Are Your IM Efforts Suffering from Compulsive Habits?

I've noticed that I tend to compulsively check my AdSense stats lately. And naturally, I fall into that tendency of checking email too often, especially since much of my work revolves around incoming emails that need quick responses.

But I still think I'm piddling away little bits of time because of it.

Do you guys have any compulsive habits you'd like to share? Not that I'm trying to create another complex, but it would be interesting to see if they're harming or helping our IM efforts.

I'll admit when I first started out I wasn't shy about hitting the refresh button multiple times a day on my Adsense reports to see how they changed. I very quickly realized that the numbers were not going to go up unless I got to work, so that took care of that problem.

    Yeah pretty compulsive.

Google is my addiction. There's too much info at our fingertips.

Then there's tweaking layouts, graphics, etc. until satisfied ad nauseum.

Add a little Perfectionism Complex, and it's easy to trick yourself you're in "busy" mode.

LOL i used to be a serious stats junkie... my employees used to call me the refresh guy or MR F5...

i later understood that this was really unproductive... my energy was better focused on enjoying what i earn and building new things.

get some good music while working... focus on making stuff better and only check your stats a few times a day... i thought this was nutz till i went weeks without logging into adwords... which is a tough one cause that's money out!

at any rate... watch out for that compulsion... it can be a dangerous time eater and source of "bad stats" depression.

set a time aside to check stats and stick to it... trust me... it was a tough part to be addicted... then... i threw away my blackberry and now don't even charge my phone.

just a little rant cause this one is personal to me... we built this business to live our dream lives... not be trapped to it.

great thread im sure lots of people feel similar.

Yeah - I can get wrapped up in music, too. I need to get better at building playlists and just picking one, haha

I tend to check my stats a lot, my affiliate sales, etc. but then I am online many many hours so I figure I deserve.
I probably really need to get offline for a while and go take a walk

LOL MR F5! I can just picture that!

I tend to get distracted with little things also. Checking emails, stats...and so on.

I think I am going to structure my day a little different and check my mail once every 4 hours and set aside 15 minutes to address support issues at each mail check. Then go back to the task at hand.

Distraction is a big time killer.. I learned that setting a time aside every couple of hours to check stats, emails, adsense and so on as a little break time works..

You have to discipline yourself to stay focused when working or you will never get anywhere..

One of my worst habits was getting a project going then while doing it coming up with another and another and another till I have no time. So I had to stop and discipline myself to break that habit..

Yes I too get distracted checking stats and emails and I know that on the days when I am really strict with myself and don't check them I get so much more accomplished.
