Please Help me,

I am new in the SEO industry. I have come up with a company to perform SEO tasks for various websites owner. As I am a novice, I need to understand each terminology that is commonly used in SEO world. I have heard that website is keen in improving web traffic and page rank (PR) to get better position on the search engines. Besides, it also mentioned about the different services like on-page optimization and off-page optimization. However, I am confused. I can't make out whether PR is achieved through good traffic or it is because of good PR, impressive traffic is achieved.

There's only one SEO term you need to know: backlinks

They're the cornerstone of SEO. You have to create good, content specific links to your site that will be in congruence with the keywords you wish to do well for.

Google looks at the importance of the sites from which your links are coming in to decide if your site is popular or not. Having your links on what they view as "authority sites" will do wonders for your site's page rank which will improve its position in search engine and get you more visitors in return...

Well, you also need to do good on-page optimization, along with the backlinks, but that is pretty easy. The backlinks require the most work.

Don't worry too much about PR. That is just a designation for the value that Google assigns your site, based on a wide range of criteria, including trust, and is something that develops over time. PR doesn't determine your ranking for specific keywords, but a high PR always helps.

I've seen sites with little to no back links ranking above the fold for pretty competitive niches. I've also seen sites with tons of back links and zero PR out ranking sites that are clearly the authority.

    Go figure right?

I think the main thing to remember is that content on your site is King work on that area first then I would work on back linking.

    Briefly ...

It's because of good PR that traffic is achieved, rather than the reverse. It's not quite as simple as this, but it works this way round, really.

High PR is one of the things that will move a site higher up in the search-engine results, thus attracting more "organic traffic".

PR itself is attained from many things (including the site's content) according to the search-engines' secret algorithms of which many people pretend to know all the details, but they don't really. However, it does seem almost universally agreed that backlinks are pretty important. Especially relevant backlinks, and from sites which have some PR themselves. A few backlinks from high-PR relevant authority sites are probably worth thousands of "random backlinks".
