Warriors who are making a full time income online...and have been through it all...

I have been in online marketing about a year. I am a doctor selling two e-books on addiction. One book is for spouses of alcoholics and one is for parents of an addicted teen (I just launched this one). I have separate websites and squeeze pages , the whole 9 yards for both etc.

I am confused about the basis my approach. Where do I go from here? I have an active blog for my first book and have worked like a dog to get my squeeze page on the first page of google. I am starting this process on my second book (building my list etc)..

Here's the kicker. For my 2nd book, I picked a keyword that looked pretty solid 8 weeks ago- "teen substance abuse"- and I bought a url with this in it. When I put in in google ext tool over this week-end- this long tailed phrase doesn't even show for getting any keyword searches. So- here are my 3 questions:

1) Do I switch it to another url that i already own that may get more traffic such as teenage substance abuse or teenage alcoholism (lots of traffic/competitive and doesn't cover "drugs")?

2) Do I get one central url with either my name that I market my 2 books on- do all my SEO for my name rather than for separate websites and blogs (both alcoholic spouses and parents of addicted teens)?

3) Do I use one central url with a theme that covers both books where you can click on which book is of interest to you. I put one up like this last week when I was on a radio show discussing both books.

Basically, do I keep the ebook sites completely separate or not? Do I make an effort to drive traffic to a central website? Do I change the url on my teen substance abuse site or not?

Thanks

    1) Another options is to set the product up on both domains and take two different sales approaches. If you only want to do one, I'd go with the more targeted one. John Schwartz makes a good point (several actually) about the new Google keyword tool. The old one used data from all of Google's partner sites, while the new only only uses Google. I don't want to give too much away about his product, but suffice it to say the new tool results in significantly lower numbers. In reality, the numbers are probably about the same.

2 & 3) Will anyone be searching for your name? If not, that's probably not the answer from a profitability standpoint, although you may want to own your name on principle.

What I do is sell most of my products from a central site, and also set up a second, product specific site for some of the higher priced products.

I recommend you "silo" your site.

Make one main site themed out on "addiction" and then divide your sub niches or "categories," if you have a blog, to "spouses of alcoholics," and the other, "parents of an addicted teen."

Next, I would take your keyword and keyword phrases (including "long tail) and use those to develop backlinks to your two sub niches within your main site. Article marketing is great for that. Actually backlinks to interior pages of a website score higher anyways.

What I am recommending is similar to your choice #3. Keep both books on your main site and link each out to a separate sales page (for each book) For opt-in, you can use one opt in box on the main URL because in your autoresponders, you can cross promote both books.

      Good advice from netkid.

I would also advise spending some good time on getting affiliates. This is a huge advantage for you as a vendor - you can build your own army of affiliates and let them worry about ranking...

You've already had some sound advice, but I'd be interested in where you see your future going.

For instance, are you staying in practice as a doctor? Do you have plans for more books? Is your specialty staying with the subject of addiction?

The answers to these questions might lead to a better understanding of the direction you should take concerning your online profile.

You say you've been interviewed on the radio - are you already a recognized expert in your field? Do you want to be? If so, maybe you should begin to get your name across more than your individual products. That would be a concerted long-term project, rather than a quick ebook launch, but, again, it depends on where you want your career to go.

Actually all options suggested by all here is workable. I agree with Frank D. You have to look at what the "future" looks like for where you want to go.

I think that is the dilemna that most IM'rs have..they don't plan out the flow of where it's going to lead.

I have a clear direction of where I want to go with my two themes and how it will develop into workable and sustainable sales funnels.

It might help to get a "whiteboard" and hang it on your wall and draw out your plan and keep it in sight everyday so you know what you are working towards. The whiteboard really helped straighten me out to where I am going....

I don't know. I would go against what they have said.

At this point in your career in the IM business I think you aren't stable enough yet to just make one site. I think you would benefit more from making two distinct websites with two different approaches.

Now, if that long-tail keyword isn't getting all that traffic, it's okay, don't freak. Just find out that is an incorporate it ALL throughout your page. You can keep the domain.

See which method works best for you. You will fail 10 times before you win once.

  • hi,

if you are a doctor, then I am assuming that you actually have some disposable income to spend.

Do not waste your time trying to figure out SEO, etc., as you will probably need a lot of time to invest until you start doing it correctly. Instead, you might consider advertising and experiment with that. Please note, that it can get expensive very quickly and very easily, so start off with small amounts until you figure out something that works for you.

There is a lot of good advice her, but not one clear path- so let me give you a little detail that might lead to specific advice:
Goal- to get very well known in the niche of addiction. My online efforts led to the radio show-but that is just a start. My long term goal is to make my living as an author.

No one, but a local person seeking treatment as a patient would be doing a search for my name. TheKeys point is that I am not well known enough to have a central site. I too am worried no one will click multiple times to get to the right sales page.

I am still unclear if I should change my url I used market samurai and google keyword tool to pick teen substance abuse and now it doesn't show any searches! Teenage substance abuse shows a lot more- but still not significant traffic. Not sure on which way to go with keywords and need help with this too.

I don't want to spend money on advertising- so I need to concentrate on doing SEO on my own.

Does that info help y'all (Texan) give me direction?

In that case, I wouldn't be too concerned with the short-term SEOing of your second eBook. Rather, I'd work on making your name known as the expert within the field of addiction.

You should seriously consider publishing a (real) book. These days, it's a lot easier to self-publish and nothing does more to position you as an expert than to have a published book on your subject.

You should be doing 2 anyway to brand yourself, also get the books published on Kindle as well, there was a WSO on self publishing a while back that should benefit you.

I would recommend you keep working on your websites but get these books published on Amazon, either in print or for the Kindle. Kindle now also has Amazon Singles, which are shorter than the average book that your ebooks might fit into perfectly.

After reading, I think I should keep the sites and separate to start. If I go with Amazon, don't they control the price? Is it worth it? Do any of you have experience selling a book on Amazon?
    thanks
