Starting a Classifieds Site

Hi all, I am new to WF, and had a question. I am starting a classifieds site and was wondering if anyone has experience in getting it going in regards to attracting people to post ads (free) when the site is pretty much empty? No one wants to post ads if they think no one looks at it. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

You might want to rethink your business model. Not sure about the area which you intend to serve, but with free ads on Kijiji.com (an eBay company) you might do better offering a service to post ads on that site for folks who aren't too familiar with using a digital camera, or who don't have the know-how as to how to post stuff for sale online.

A classifieds site needs lots of ads, lots of traffic, and lots of turnover every day. Established sites like Kijijij and Craigslist already tap have all of that and more.

    Just a thought.

Any kind of social site(forums, dating) suffers from
    the same problem.

My advice is that you focus on a niche or a geographical
area and grow from there. For instance, Craigslist started
exclusively as a classifieds site for San Francisco before
expanding to the entire US and eventually, world.

I think that Classifieds Sites seems dead. Maybe, you should try others techniques.

Thanks for the feedback. It is a pretty specific area, so I might not get a super amount of traffic, but it would be a good service if people used it. So from what you have said so far, it would be more trouble than it's worth and would be really hard for it to be known. I am a web programmer so I don't have much experience with the marketing aspect. I can build it, but I can't make them come...

Champstar - that is a good idea, do things like ebooks as a free thing when they post an ad. And maybe too, set up a blog and a discussion forum to drive traffic possibly?

I think you should put some sample ads on the site and then send traffic to the site encouraging people to post their ads for free. How about offering your visitors a free ebook on a niche like "marketing technique", if they post their ads on your site. I think this will also encourage them to post ads.
