Managing many WordPress sites

I plan to launch 50 or so niche sites in 2011. To do so I need to automate as much as possible. I thought I could use 5 or so instances of WordPress multisite, with a network of 10 sites per installation.

If I wish to sell a site, will I be able to sell it as an individual site and not as a whole network? I ask because I know that WP uses the same database for all the sites hosted on a multisite instance.

If WP multisite is a no go because sites within it can't be easily exported and sold, what are other options that you guys and gals use?

I considered WPDirect but it is pricey to start with and it received mixed reviews. ManageWP is in beta but I don't how much I can trust it with my login and niche data.

What solution do you use for your business?

Number one thing you want to do is keep organized with this many sites. Keep an excel sheet of everything about each site. This will not only be best for yourself but FANTASTIC when you need to sell.

Now about multisite, I still believe you can backup that specific site via the phpmyadmin or wp admin panel.

I use WPD (free trial) and it is the best thing ever....but yes....rather pricey when I will start paying for it...
    I bolded the important part
That software is scary, it's so usefull and can integrate with so many other things like GA and Market Samurai....and others, not sure which.
It centers all your sites into 1 place and you can easily sell them later, you just have to pass over some details in the transaction.

WPD is fairly decent but very expensive. Firepow is another similar service but once again...very expensive.

Keep looking, I'm sure you will find other (more affordable) options available that can handle what you want.

Worst case scenario, you could do it yourself with a spreadsheet. It wont be as fast and if its not integrated into some kind of tracking system there is more of a possibility of human error as well, but it can be done.

Thank you for you answer, Istvan and everyone else. That's pretty much what I figured as well for multisite, but I was hoping for a less convoluted solution.

What can be "less convoluted" about it?

You use the regular export function to export the data, set up a new standalone site, then import the data into it.

If you have any particular plugins and/or themes, you're going to have to install them either way first.

The other option is setting up all of your sites independently, which IMHO is a whole lot MORE convoluted and time-consuming in the long-run.

The choice is simple: save a ton of time over the long-run and spend a few minutes peeling off a site from the network as a standalone site; or waste a ton of time over the long-run and save a few minutes when you make a sale.

You might also want to take a look at this plugin:

XCloner - Backup and Restore made Simple | Professional PHP/Mysql Backup application, Joomla backup component, Wordpress backup plugin

It might deconvolute things a bit for you.
