What to charge for private ad sales?

I run a sports blog that has been growing rapidly in popularity. With the rate of growth I expect to be pushing 1 million page views a month in the not-too-distant future. I'm starting to get inquiries about advertising on the site, but have never sold ad space before and am at a bit of a loss.

Anyone run a popular sports or entertainment blog that can give me a ballpark idea of what to quote for a 300x250 ad spot above the fold for my traffic level? Any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to drive away advertisers by quoting an unreasonably high price, but I also don't want to shortchange myself.

I charge $300 a month for the same size ad on a real estate website of mine that averages 20k visitors monthly. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply NuZu. I suspect advertisers are willing to shell out a fair bit more for space on a real estate site/blog vs. a sports enthusiast site, but it gives me a starting point.

If you can show how well you can target your visitors, they will pay a lot more. Some of my blogs in very specific niches (technology, investments, medical, etc) will pay as much as $600-$800/mo for a top banner ad. I offer a 6 month or 12 month performance contract with the first month half price or even free.
