Selling domains - what's your best tip?

I've got about 15 domains I want to sell. Very few of them were ever attached to a website. Most are about 9 months old. I'm familiar with TDNam, Sedo and Afternic but have only tried TDNam once with no success. If you have a positive experience with selling domains, what is your tip(s) to do so successfully? What makes one attractive to a buyer? Is there a way to get more attention to a domain? What key thing(s) do I need to know? THX!

if you want to sell domain succesfully i think you would need to have domains which has some marketing potential. For example if you sell second-hand cars a domain with a marketing potential would be cheapsecondhandcars.com or something similar. This will told eventual visitors what your website is about.

This is one thing to note. The second one is to have an aged domain. Aged domains are extremly valuable for google. To give you an example i have recently seen a 15yrs old domain which has been sold on flippa for $7500.

You could easy find aged domains at Register Compass. If you are seriously about selling domains (or websites) i recommend you register compass. Note that the service is not free (usually $37 monthly) but you could find golden nuggets there.

The tird think you most take into consideration is to have domain with page rank and backlinks. The higher the page rank the better and this also goes for backlinks. Again register compass will help you. They will show you domains that are expired or are expiring soon , will give you their page rank and also the number of backlinks they have. Many of them could be bought for $50 or so. Just imagine buying a domain for $50 and then flip it for $3k for example. Talks about good profit.

And regarding your own domains i recommend you to build a website for, build a few backlinks and make some money with the websites first befre selling. This will increase the amount of money you could get.

    I hope this helps

    Hi Octavyo,
Thanks for your response. Most of the domains I want to sell were bought for reasons that are no longer useful to me. I understand the age/PR & backlinks adds value, but that is not the case here. I'm just looking for some insight from folks who have sold domains who didn't have the age/PR & backlinks going for them. Thanks anyway.

All the domain I have are bought for development so I am not actively selling them but I still do list them on Sedo with the price that I can not refuse if I get an offer and I have sold quite few of them that way.

I think Sedo is must when selling domains as that is one of the best marketplace for domains. And of course, to get more visibility for your domains you can list them whit domining forums like NamePros or DomainState.

What do you mean a 'price that I can not refuse if I get an offer' ? Extra high? How high?

Search for companys that have a similar domain if yours is better. Also find people in teh same field as the domain. I have sold many to other businesses this way. if the domain name is REALLY GOOD you would have probaly got offers already

Do you mean approach e.g. a bunch of chiropractors with a chiropractor domain? One at a time?
I have not put any of these domains up for sale yet, so I haven't gotten any offers yet.
      Thx!

I heard a couple years ago that I could list a GoDaddy domain I wanted to sell on multiple auction sites at the same time. While poking around GD Auction site, I came across this 'If you list a domain as a public auction, you can only list it with GoDaddy Auctions. At the end of the auction the highest bidder wins the domain. Auctioning domains on GoDaddy Auctions while offering them on other sites violates the Universal Terms of Service you agreed to when you set up your GoDaddy Auctions listing. ' Does the SECOND line about 'offering them on other sites' only pertain to the public auctions they mention in the FIRST line? Or every kind of auction?

There are hundreds of very effective ways to sell domain names, but the method you use depends heavily on the quality and demand for the domain you're selling.

One general tip I can suggest, is this. First, list it for sale on Sedo. If you own the .COM, contact the owners of the .NET and .ORG and let them know that you have just listed the .COM version of THEIR domain for sale, and link to the Sedo listing. Let them know they may make any offer at all (you can set a minimum at Sedo).

This is an effective method because more often than not, .NET and .ORG domain owners would love to own the .COM but never take the time to ask if it's for sale.
