How To Get 19,000+ Mailing List Subscribers

I started building my mailing lists 16 months ago and have lists in 2 different markets:

IM
Weight Loss

19,000+ subscribers in 16 months may not be a lot for some of the more experienced marketers out there, but it's a decent result. And the average numbers (traffic, signups) are growing everyday.

Bear in mind, I got 19,000+ subscribers without doing any major product launch. This is all with 'guerilla' traffic getting methods and other more residual traffic building strategies.

List building is my obsession and I have spent countless hours poring over list building PDF's, traffic blueprints, and tons of videos.

I've bought Traffic Secrets 2.0 and have yet to go through it (heard there's nothing new there, but there SHOULD be something). At the moment, here is how I built a list that has a combined total of 19,000 subscribers in 16 months:

Step 1 - Write and submit articles to the article directories. This is an old yet proven way to send targeted traffic to your site.

Step 2 - Sign up for some high trafficked forums in your market. Create a signature file promoting your site and start posting solid content.

Step 3 - Sign up for some giveaways and become a contributor. This is an ultra fast way to build a list.

Step 4 - Buy several Power Leads packages at Get Subscribers. Funnel the leads straight into your autoresponder account.

Step 5 - Set up a few Google AdWords campaigns. Target niche keywords and test your ad copy.

Step 6 - Set up classified ads at these sites - Craigslist, eBay Classifieds, US Free Ads and Yahoo Classifieds.

Step 7 - Sign up for List Joe and get their premium account. You will be able to blast an ad out to 3000 subscribers every 3 days. A great list builder!

Step 8 - Contact potential joint venture partners and arrange a list swap. Your JV partners promote your opt-in page to their lists while you promote theirs to your list. This is the fastest strategy to build a targeted, responsive list.

Step 9 - Set up a blog at Wordpress or Blogger and post up new content daily. Ping your new posts at Pingomatic to get instant search engine recognition.

Step 10 - Buy some ezine ads. Sign up for the Directory Of Ezines and search for ezines that are related to your market. Throw away the losers you advertise in and continually advertise in the winners you find to get more subscribers.

Most of my sign-ups are from coregistration (Get Subscribers), JV's and giveaways. The latter two are more one-shot bursts of huge traffic, while coregistration can be an ongoing, continual thing, so that's the good thing about that.

At the moment I'm not making $1 a subscriber. To do that, I think you have to put in a high-ticket product somewhere (home study course, coaching etc) or at least a high-paying continuity program.

Or maybe something like building a relationship with the people on your list!

When I has a list of 200 people, I made 1000 dollars from them... And though now its not $5/ mo,, it is continually over $1.5 per mo.

Yes articles are a big part. I prefer Get Subscribers at the moment though, it's far less intensive and it only takes a few minutes of work.

I think in your strategy for capturing email subscribers you should seriously consider
how to get quality subscribers on your list and how to keep that list responsive.

Numbers can be very deceptive.

I've seen lists of under 3,000 that produced astonishing sales and lists of over
50,000 that produced almost nothing.

Quality is very important.

Also subscribers who've purchased off you once or twice are far higher quality
than people who've just signed up for a free gift.

That's a good argument for having a front end product you give away substantial commissions for ($7 secrets style) so you can build a list of high quality buyers and
get that list through affiliates or JV partners sending their lists to your front end offer (something you forgot to mention).

I find GetSubscribers deliver between 2 and 4 subscribers per day. Whilst slow it is sure. Don't just rely on one source for sign-ups though, some of the current 'giveaways' are bringing in 40 subs a day!

With 10,000 you can start to really snowball. that seems to be it. Things start small but beyond a certain point it can grow huge real fast.

All you need is a super free offer and ten JV's with 10,000 lists. Some quality social proof and then you can begin vying for a super list - right ?

But many would argue quality over quantity.

You beat me to it, Andrew. I think your comments encapsulate what most people miss about list building. A list isn't worth squat if it doesn't respond. I hope that's not that case here.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Fabian's strategies.

I'm pretty sure he has some good lists going.

Any and every lead generation strategy/list building strategy that breaks even or makes a profit on the front end is worth pursuing.

Even strategies that make a loss on the front end might be worth pursuing.

But you do need to keep some kind of measure of the long term value you're building and that's in the responsiveness of your list.

you have to use the getresponse autoresponder to get co-reg subs from getsubscribers right? is this how you are doing it? I know aweber doesn't allow co-reg subscribers...so that's why i'm curious...

I'd like mention that fabian know's what's up...we've done a few ad swaps together and i've always been happy with the results.

i've built my list just in the IM market up to 12,000 in 1 year...but i've only used 4 different traffic methods (actually 5..but i'm not going to mention the 5th one)

I like all these methods because of how little work they require. articles, ppc, and seo seem like too much work to me.

Yes very good point.

If you want a budget script you can use the $7 secrets script ($7 plus maybe another $50 or less if you get someone else to install it).

That will automate all your affiliate sales...they'll be paid instantly into their Paypal email accounts which is highly motivating for them and saves you a ton of work.

Any script along these lines will give you:

1. An email sign up page so you can add the people who buy to a special list.

2. A one time offer page so you can immediately offer people who buy another highly targeted product (conversions on these one time offers can be very high indeed).

Using a script like this helps you maximize the profit from front end sales and capture the emails of people who buy from you into a special list on your autoresponder service (like Aweber).

OK guys, I'm going to lay out the key strategies I'm going to be using to expand on those I listed above. To be honest, I'm baffled at why I'm not using them yet.

1. Video Marketing

This is BIG. This gets serious traffic. Sure, more of the traffic will be 'rubbish' compared to other sources like article marketing or pay per click, BUT the targeted traffic comes from optimized videos that appear in the search engine rankings.

I have talked with some marketers, and they use hard-core strategies on videos and really go hard on it - link building, meticulous LSI optimization for the video title, descriptions.

Heck, even a poorly optimized video can get tons of traffic. What more, a well optimized one? And what if you submit 3 videos a day? This is something I'm scaling up on. ;-)

2. Blogging/SEO

I know many marketers use this as a powerful traffic getting strategy, and I'm kicking myself for not doing this earlier. Create a blog, post new content to it everyday, reap the search engine traffic. Great idea. Many marketers use this as their MAIN marketing strategy, in fact. Now, if you combine this with article marketing, co-registration and go full scale on all of them without giving skewed preference to any tactic, we're talking about serious traffic numbers.

There's other tactics like banner ads and pay per view ads that I will be focusing on too. Will discuss those in another post

In addition to what you've listed, here are two other really great ways to get subscribers:

Myspace
Video Traffic

In fact, these two methods alone net an average of 50 subscribes a day for me and they are not only highly targeted double opt in subscribers but I don't pay a dime in advertising.

It's pretty darn cool!

Which list has been the most profitable for you, IM or weight loss?

I've just started using the $7 Dollar script. My new project is http://www.massivetraficpack.com . It allows anyone to sell the 68 page ebook for 100% of the sale price and get 60% of the back end OTO as well.

Has many more features than the $7 script but of course costs a little more.


I think if you're setting a goal for number of email subscribers it may be wiser to attach it to an income goal.

So you might say I want 10,000 email subscribers making me $10,000 in sales every month.

That way you're staying focused not just on list quantity but also on list quality.
