Secret Millionaire 2011

Have you watched ABC's Secret Millionaire this past Sunday with Dani Johnson?. I think its a great idea not only to help local communities but get traffic to your site as it was for Dani Johnson who had expressed a shocking gratitude when she saw Google trends with her sitting at top spot in just minutes after the show was aired this past Sunday.

Dani Johnson Secret Millionaire TV Show

I know we have a few here on WF that has done the same and continues to do charity work for local communities. Where's Dr.Mani?. Anyone else here to be recognized?.

She burned up Google trends for 6 hours that day and they got 12 million views. What's interesting is that she turned ABC down 3 times before giving the ok to film and she wasn't paid a cent. I'm sure she got more than what she gave away that day. I love stories like this.

Interesting that you mentioned this because I just watched it tonight on Hulu.com. (I refuse to pay for cable.)

LOVED the show! (I'm waiting for Alexandria Brown's turn on the season finale!)

I'd never heard of Dani Johnson before watching the show tonight. Apparently, she's made quite a name for herself prior to this. I had to dig around a little to find out she'd made her fortune in network marketing. (And I'd still love to know what MLM company it was!)

Like a lot of people, I've been caught up in MLM before and want NO part of any of it. It's even more incestuous than IM! But Dani seems very genuine. (Although after viewing some of her YouTube clips, I don't like how she mixes religious preaching with her business training.)

It was a very inspiring show!

I was about to say we've had this for a long time.

It's a good show and you'll enjoy the first series. The novelty wore off for me after that

yeah its been out over here for a while. one was filmed just up the road from me here in the north east of england.

as it was popular i used to say every time a new series started, if someone turns up with a camera man, and asking questions about the area and things.surely some of them would know about the show and milk it to get money out of them.

      • I love that show. They also have an Aussie version of it which is really great. What I also enjoy is that I find it quite inspiring to see millionaires/successful businessmen in practice and how they generally conduct themselves. I think everyone can learn a lot from them.

I once read a great quote that went something like "The hardest part about becoming a millionaire isn't earning the money, it's becoming the person you need to be to be to accumulate a million dollars"

        Great show.

I've been watching each episode on Hulu and watched the newest one this morning.

I DO like the show. A lot, actually. But somehow, I'm also left with a bad aftertaste after watching. It's very formulaic. (All American I guess.) I understand that the producers want to get the impact of the reactions and the amounts given, but somehow, it seems to take away from the show...

And I'm finding myself very turned off by the millionaires themselves. I actually like them all. But the way they give the money... Yes, $10,000 is a lot. And it IS a very generous gift, no matter how wealthy the giver is.

But there's something about it being scripted... About how the giver gives his/her thoughts/feelings/reactions before/after the gift. And how small the gift is in relation to their wealth....

I was VERY turned off by Ferber's comment in the latest episode: "Want to feel good about yourself? Give something away."

Feeling good about yourself is a BYPRODUCT. And if it's your main reason for giving, then it's purely selfish, which defeats the purpose. Give for the benefit it brings to others, not mainly to feel good about yourself.

I'd feel a lot better about the "puny" $10,000 gifts if they weren't done so publicly, so "on camera." That's just way too "Hollywood" for me.

What I'd like to know is: are these millionaires helping in an ONGOING way???? A one-time gift is great and can truly be a lifesaver, depending on the situation. But we all know the old adage "Give a man a fish..." Lottery winners are testament to the futility of huge, one-time windfalls. I raided my retirement accounts last year to start a biz after I lost my job. $30,000 gone in one short year. Poof. Only time will tell if it was a wise "investment" or a foolish gamble.

I liked how Ferber set up a scholarship. Now THAT'S giving with lasting impact. (Or at least TRYING to give with lasting impact.) But dropping a one-time $10,000 donation on a charity that will have their hands out yet again next month or next year -- on camera no less! -- just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Somehow, James Malinchek's episode REALLY bugged me. He and Alexandria Brown are the only featured millionaires I'm familiar with -- and I came away really disliking him for some reason after that episode. Can't quite put my finger on it.... If he did indeed make the money back after the episode, then that was NOT charity. It was marketing, pure and simple. Ick!

Maybe I'm being too harsh. I DO like the show and the effects (or potential effects) it has on the general public (to raise awareness and promote philanthropy, if nothing else). I dunno.

Alexandria Brown is one of my mentors and her episode is the season finale. She's told us there's a reason they saved her episode for last. I'm hoping she'll do better than the others.

Yes there's been some great (uk) shows where multi millionaires realise they've made a ton of money but lost some of their soul. To see these very successful and stone faced people break down and cry at what others are putting in local towns is a real eye opener.
I think it's also interesting when they've followed up a year later and the millionaires say how the experience has changed their lives by giving something back.

If he was truly concerned he should have given several million. I'll still watch the show but take their sincerity with a grain of salt.

James Malinchek (sp) did a big launch on the night of his show two weeks ago and made back his $100,000 immediately.

It's his money, he can do what he wants with it. Secondly, you have no idea if he donates to other causes or not. Just because someone owns a lot of material things does not mean they don't donate money to charity. What I find tasteless is people telling what other people should do with their money.

These people are having parties and rolling out new product launches prior to their show date.

I have no problem if they said "I did it because I know I'll get national exposure and I'll make a lot of money from it". But they ACT like they are philanthropic when indeed they are not. I personally know 5 of the people who are cast in this series, so I have a little more insight than you do.
Lol you personally know 5 of the people?

                Pull the other one.

Why don't you concentrate on building up enough of an empire so you can afford to give just 1% of the "Pathetic $100,000" they gave away.

The fact that they are rolling out product launches suggests nothing more than they are savvy business people.

I find it funny how everyone is so quick to criticize these people who probably give more away to charity in a week than they earn in a year and pay more tax dollars than you will in your lifetime - fact.

When you appear on TV that has a global audience of over 20 million, when you make a million and give away three quarters of it then by all means rant about the selfishness of these people - until then, be quiet.

This is a success story to be remembered because it shows that people who help out others less fortunate than themselves will be rewarded many times over. I'm happy for her business success based on that show, and I hope she keeps up her good work. This should be a challenge for each of us to go to a local charity and simply find a way you can help out. I can almost guarantee you that if you use your creativity, you will find some way to work with the charitable organization to increase your traffic and conversions.

The more money you make the more bills you have and everything you buy has a price. So for someone to say he gave only $100,000 out of the $500 million is simply not true. This was only one show and John Ferber also gives to other charities. John don't make money just to sit and look pretty all day. He make money to help others whether it be their family, friends, employees, charities, etc. and because of the hard work he put in to create that huge wealth, he now can treat himself to whatever he wants, whether it's a luxury home, a sports car, tropical cruise, lavish vacation ... he earned it.

And who knows maybe the next secret millionaire could be you.

Wow! I was so impressed with the founders of Curves. Not only for the amount they gave, but for their obvious love for each other and their sincerity. Somehow, they came through as more sincere to me than some of the other millionaires.

And like Mrs. Heavin, Justin's excitement over a pair of sunglasses got to me. Wow!

The thing is, you don't have to wait to achieve success to give back. People who wait to give back (or think that their "puny" $10 or whatever makes no difference) are missing the point. Whatever you religious beliefs, tithing is actually a critical element of financial success. It's really not about the amount, but about giving back itself and about the HABIT of giving on a regular basis.

Back when I was unemployed long-term the first time, I picked up a copy of Mary Hunt's books The Financially Confident Woman and Debt-Proof Living and became one of her newsletter members.

She tells the story of how she paid off over $100,000 in credit card -- and lived to tell about it. Her books and site spell out her system for paying off debt in record time and building up a financial cushion. A critical part of her system is tithing.

But she stresses that even if you can't afford 10%, give what you CAN afford, with no expectation of return. Even if it's just 1%. Then work your way to 10% or more.

I got serious about my finances before I even got a job and started giving as part of that. But I wanted to know that my donation was making a difference, not just going to a big pot of money at some giant non-profit. I chose Compassion International (Sponsor a Child - Compassion) because I was assigned an individual child and my measly $28/mo fed, clothed and provided school supplies to that child. It wasn't just a cause. It was a LIFE.

That was 10 years ago. Now it's $38/mo.

I eventually got a job and was able to pay off ALL of my debt. I remained debt-free for some time and more importantly, held that job and was able to become independent of my family. I didn't make a lot of money by most people's standards, but to me, it meant THE WORLD.

Teachings and verses from my childhood Sunday School lessons sometimes pop into my head randomly and I remembered this verse from Malachi 3:10:

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

That really IS a universal principal, not really a religious one. I kind of get a kick out of the "Test me, I dare ya" statement.

Recently, Lisa Sasevich shared on one of her preview calls about how she and her husband did a tithing "test" for 6 months and came out WAY ahead.

It really doesn't make financial sense, but in this case, 1+1 does NOT equal 2. It really equals 3 (or more). If I have $10 and give $1, I'll actually end up with $10 (or more).

Even Dan Kennedy, in one of his No B.S. books (I can't remember which one), talked about giving back and how he really ended up with more. He encouraged his readers to open a giving account, put money in it regularly and then give the money away.

I haven't been managing my finances (or giving) like I should lately. But Secret Millionaire inspires me to start again!

If you're not sure of where to give and want to make sure (nearly) all the money is going to the cause itself, I highly recommend Compassion! You'll be assigned a specific child, your donations will go to that child and you'll get a photo and letters from that child.
