Can I match me ebay income

Hi All, sorry if this is coming off as a newbie post.

Currently, I make about 5-6 grand a month on ebay. It's not glamorous though. Shipping, packaging, returns, customer service, dealing with suppliers ahh it's a headache and I'm really getting burned out. I was first introduced to IM in 2006, made about few dollars (literally) but never got into it.

Is a 5-6k monthly income a far stretch? is that spot only reserved to the pro's or can it be made within 6months to a year or so. (that's about how long it took me ebay business to grow)

I know it takes work, trust me.. I know what hard work is, even if it is out of your home.

Thanks everyone!

Will

    hey Will

    It certainly is possible.

I too had a great ebay business - in digital products - I was earning $2000 a week until the big E changed the rules & stopped digital delivery.

I also got tired of fraudulent claims etc that go with an eBay business, and lets not even mention the fees!

So - short answer - yes you can, is your ebay business something you can take to IM rather than eBay?

Have you started using your ebay business as a traffic funnel rather than just a sales funnel?

Do you use your about me page to collect subscribers to your email optin?

If you want to take your ebay business to the net rather than eBay - I'd start doing some of those things.

Get the domain name to match your ebay username, as well as a domain that is keyword specific.

Start driving traffic to your site from eBay - you can do this quite legally.

Don't use the ebay message system - use outlook etc - make sure your signature has your email & off-eBay domain - tell your customers they'll get specials that aren't available on eBay.

put your domain email - (will@myDomain.com) - in ALL your eBay adds and encourage people to ask any questions - people usually understand that the email addy like that is also your website & they'll check it out.

The advantage of doing all of this is that you dont have to pay those glorious eBay fees that can surely destroy an otherwise profitable business.

I hope I'm telling you something you already know - I wish I had done this with my sticker business before I shut it down to do other things. (although I really don't like making stickers!!)

    Good luck

If something is going for you and you are making 5-6K, it will not be prudent to dump it for chasing other make money doing nothing program. I think you should start with an ebook as to how do you make 5K-6K. How do you source your products? What software your use to post etc. Also start a blog.

If you can afford, try to hire somebody so that you can download 50% of routine work to the hired help. College students are good source. Even if you make 10% less than what you make right now, it will be better to hire somebody for 50% of your work. It has some tax implications also because you have to pay social security and medicare for the hired person.

The trick is to write a detailed process documents so that new person can immediately be effective without your active help.

You can pursue other options in free time.

    Hi Stef,
Thanks for the advice. I never have done any of the above, because my brain was geared around "ebay sales" an nothing more. I also sold a ebook on ebay until they cut those out

    You're ideas are great though.

    Onera,
I'm not seeking out a "getting paid doing nothing plan." As I stated before, I know what work is, I'm just looking for a different type of work. I basically run a retail store out of my apartment, it's not enjoyable like it once was. Dealing with ebay is very annoying, yes the money is okay but it comes with a big headache. I can't even go away for a week because if I do, items won't get shipped, etc.. my business runs me, it should be the other way around.

I hear what you're saying about hiring someone. I did that, I used craiglist to have someone help out with my shipping.. but things always got messed up, they put the wrong items in the wrong box's so it had incorrect postage, or items get shipped to the wrong location.. talk about another headache..

I'm not saying i'm going to stop selling on ebay right now..i'm saying I would prefer a business where I can be more mobile, and it doesnt own me.

    Thanks,
    Will

Hey guys -- I sold ebooks before rule change and I still do! All I do is ship them on a CD and problem solved. Sure its a bit more work, but the volume hasn't slipped much. Also you can list digital products in the classified section (I know, I know)

    Hi Eric,
Yes, I still haven't figured out how to fully master the classifieds section. I'm just lack motivation now when it comes to ebay. That's why I want to try to start to venture into something new.

      Hi Will

I did the eBay thing myself for a couple of years and I basically shut most of it down early this year to concentrate on IM - just selling off the last few bits and bobs in the Christmas push!

I understand completely what you're saying about how mundane and boring it becomes shipping and dealing with ungrateful pushy customers! It ain't no fun waking up uninspired and having to deal with eBay/Paypal and the buyers. Plus your house becomes a warehouse as you run out of space to stuff cardboard boxes!

I would say that it is possible to make the kind of money you're making now with IM - you just have to believe it and work a proper plan.

I mean it has taken me longer to start making money at IM because I didn't do the right things from the beginning. I ran off doing things my own way and only now, in the last 6 or so weeks have I started to make some real money.

All I can think is I wasted a lot of time, but then I've also learnt a whole lot and I'm well on my way.

Decide what and how you want to do this and approach it systematically and learn how to outsource the parts of IM that will seriously drag you down!

      Good luck with it.
