What Qualities Will You Find In Great IM Coach?

Hey All,

I was consider signing up for a coaching program and got a LOT of opinions about the offer at hand. I want to know from warriors how they feel about coaching programs and what their "ideal" coach has to offer them?

Is it the guarantee?
Is it the rep?
Is it their positive attitude and their determination to see you succeed?
Is it the price?

Let me know, I'm curious, what makes up a good IM coach?

I both agree and disagree with this.

The coach should make sure that the person makes some money but on the other hand some clients just don't want to work! You must work to make money!

      • I'd say a great coach will keep reassuring you that what you are doing is going to work. I know from experience (this is my 3rd time back in IM, but I'm sticking at it and seeing good results now) that it's easy to lose heart and throw in the towel when you don't see results after a while. A coach would keep you motivated and give you the belief that you WILL see results if you stick with it.

I have had a few coaches over the course of my business. The qualities I feel are most important are:

Actually CARING if they make a difference in the success of your business
Offering new fresh ideas of things you can do to improve your business

I don't feel a coach can guarantee results as they don't know how/when/if someone is going to implement their ideas. There are a lot of factors that go into getting results.

A coach's job is to help the client move toward their goal - from where they are to where they want to be.

LOL That's ridiculous... sorry, but it is. What you want is someone to do the work for you, not a coach.

Coaches teach and motivate. They don't guarantee results because they can't make you do the work, and even if you do the work, they can't make you do it correctly.

Given that I trained to be a coach back in June 2000
and have experience running a coaching practice with
        real clients, here's my thoughts...

A coach is there to facilitate your development and
help you to move towards achieving your goals.

However, they are NOT responsible for your results.
        (And no, that's not a cop-out).

In fact, part of a coaches' role is to build the inner
resources of the coachee to the point where they
can get results - without relying on the coach.

Effective coaching is about building responsibility within
        the coachee.

In the field of Internet Marketing I'd say that a mentor
rather than a coach would be more appropriate. In
this case, the mentor has a proven track record and
direct experience to give to the mentee.

The first thing I'd look for is a proven track record of
helping their clients like you to get results similar to
the goals you're looking to achieve with your business.

        Dedicated to mutual success,

        Shaun

You're probably right, I've never given or received coaching so my opinion on this shouldn't be given too much weight.

To be fair, I did start my post with IMO

I would have to agree, coaches are meant to motivate and support. At the end of the day its up to you to take the advice and put it to action. I myself won't lie...there's many times where I get great advice and methods to try, but I don't put it to use cuz I'm lazy at times...I'm humans but I can't blame my coach for that.

For me its not about the money (as a coach) its about helping and its about doing what I love...teaching others. So its more than possible to actually have people wanting to coach and still be successful and legit.

You also have to think about people that are no longer able to do once they once were able to do. Maybe they got sick and just don't have the energy. Maybe they don't have the desire, but never think that the coaching is something fishy simply because someone's interested in making others money (or faster, stronger, whatever the offer is).

Oh and the reason I wouldn't coach free to ALL is because my time is valuable and it will take money for me to teach you. I have to pay fees just like you do and to be honest coaching may very well take away from my main source of income, so thinking that just because I don't coach everyone for free makes my offer bs is ridiculous.

        3. If any Large Monetary Gains are promised such as an example "Make $5000 a month in 6 weeks"....make sure there are No Additional Fees to reach that goal later on that were not told upfront would be coming.
        4. Check out any testimonials if you can to see if legitimate and not $5 Fiverr. I mean paid testimonials are ok on TV and other venues...we see them all the time, but not on the WF IMO.
        4. Personal contact via email and Skype and not just to some helpdesk person.
If the coaching sounds too good to be true it probably is. And remember this...a coach is not a miracle worker. Nothing works if you don't take action yourself.
Good points, thanks for sharing. I think we all should follow similar models when considering coaching.

Your mistake is in thinking it has to be one or the other. I make plenty from affiliate marketing and a lot of niche sites I own. But I have a background in training from my last offline job (dating back to the mid-90's). I really enjoyed that work. Very fulfilling to see someone finally "get it." So I coach in IM mostly for that. It keeps me motivated in the other things I do in IM. I get off the phone or after a webinar in the coaching environment and I'm all fired up to do my own work in that other part of my business. And yes, I like to be paid to motivate and teach...nothing wrong with that, right?

So the picture isn't as "either-or" as you seem to think.

Sorry but your argument is BS....

Giving people something for free is not always the best way to help them - I KNOW THIS... I've tried it and tested it many times.

Exactly, people will be more likely to take advantage of info and not take action if they didn't have to invest anything to get the info and training. IF they've invested something, its as if they owe it to themselves to put forth action.

So in your opinion everyone is just out for themselves. Sounds like you just got burned by a product or something recently and it's still hurting a bit. Let it go and move on.

It's not about the money ... it's about the person who is looking for a coach to make a commitment. There's nothing more frustrating than coaching someone who won't listen to them no matter what.

I could say more but why bother... your opinion will never change (prove me wrong)

In my opinion when I started the most important thing I looked for was a) someone who knew what they were doing, you will get a feel for this if you follow them for a while and b) personal contact, being able to skype or have a phone conversation when i needed was so important

I honestly think the best coach you can get is simply someone just little bit ahead of you in making money. A big plus is you can build a relationship and they will do it for free . This doesn't only build your contact network but when they tell you their success story, it will motivate you!

Their results and ability to pass them on... nothing else matters. I've seen some complete idiots get good things said about them by people who don't know any better and don't realise what they got taught was very bad advice. There are also people making money but don't really understand why and can't reproduce it and definitely can't explain it or teach it.

A great coach should push you.

They should be looking for someone that is going to succeed no matter what.

Yes, they should keep you motivated but also not sugar coat anything.

The MOST important thing a coach should possess though is KNOWLEDGE.

Also the ability to put that knowledge across to you in a way that you can relate and watch you grow.

A good im coach should have a solid resume so he knows that what he teaches works. And from then he should give you continuous support, the cost depends on you. Some courses are more expensive then other ones.

So basically you are removing coaches and financial planners from the market place all together? We should just obliterate these careers as they are not real or needed and all based on some kind of scam?

I've been providing training and coaching to corporate clients for years. The first step is to decide if you want coaching or training.

Coaching, in its truest form, is about facilitating clarity. It is not designed to tell people what to do, but rather to help them figure out what to do.

Coaching is very different from training, which is designed to teach specific skills. Training in IM would be helpful to learn how to build a list, or monetize a site, or anything that involves specific action steps.

Coaching is a higher level process involving examining values, goals, skills, and numerous other criteria. If the coach is qualified, and the student is willing, the results can be life changing.

Students should leave the coaching process with both a firm grasp of what they want and a clear plan for how to get there. Market conditions may change the "how," but a clear understanding of the "what" allows the student to quickly adapt.

It is much easier to establish ROI with training than with coaching. I would be very skeptical about a coach who promised anything other than to help the student formulate a plan for creating a business that they truly desire.

Coming from someone who has not considered coaching I guess a coach should really know about their topic.

But more than just teach you about whatever it is they should also help you realize your true potential.

They should have lots of energy so they can knock that energy into you. And they should have a knack for thinking outside of the box to help expand your imagination and ideas.

Then again I have no idea.
