Hey folks,

I know that Google don't give much away, but what is the general concensus on the use of reciprocal linking? (I'm not talking about getting your own websites on your own servers to link to each other, but genuine links between established web sites on their own servers)

As far as Google (and the other search engines?) are concerned, do they cancel each other out? Or is there still some benefit to be had by 1 or other of the parties?

Any advice gratefully received.

I've heard people say it's not worth the time and that google doesn't like it, but I do it anyway. I don't only do reciprocal linking though. I do three way linking with a lot of related sites. I also do deep link exchanges (links in a blog post) with blogs in my niche.

If you're going to do reciprocal linking, stick to good sites...check them out first before you agree to exchange links.Try to get your link on their home page, not a links page.

I have five sites on page one in google (three are in the #1 spot) and they all have reciprocal links. Try things out for yourself and see if they work. That's what I do.

I wouldn't bet on it staying on it's course in G. I've had sites that were all using recip linking. They did awesome for a while, then dropped big time for about year, then came back. So not exactly consistent. Least not in my experience.

I look at linking like a vote for your site. What would be better, some one voting for your site with no gain in mind, or two people voting for each others sites? Just my thoughts on the subject.

On a selective basis, there is nothing wrong with a few reciprocal links between sites that make sense to link to each other. You see larger companies develop networks of several sites all the time.

The main thing is not to get involved in a big campaign or automated system. That will get you in hot water.
