What is the point of a Facebook Fan Page?

I am new to facebook. I have been thinking of upsells that I can offer my clients who i do web design for. I have been hearing a lot about Facebook fan pages. Please forgive my ignorance. But what exactly is the point or benefit of a local OFFLINE business or organization to have a fan page for?

I like the idea of it, i just don't quite understand it. I want to be able to explain to my customers why a fan page will be good for their business.

In the example you gave it's simply a different medium for making contact with customers.

If you send out an update (mentioning a sale your having etc...) via FB it goes directly to your fans. They don't have to log in to their email to get it and it's delivered in almost real time due to the number of people who have auto updates set up on their smart phones.

In the situation you describe you can pitch it as a way to stay in touch with existing customers rather than a way of genereating new leads (although that can still happen too).

It more about moving with the times.

Consumers expect it these days - just like they expect businesses to be listed in google - so follow the crowd.

I personally dont use Facebook - but I know that 500m+ other people do.

Its all about exposure, by your clients having a facebook fan page, they will be exposing their brand more. Social media is becoming the new marketing trend. If your clients want to succeed against competition they have to be one up on them. Clients can also have more of a personal contact medium to offer their fans.

A minor perk for those doing Facebook paid advertising, your ad costs tend to be lower when you target a fan page, rather than an off site page.

It creates a brand name for your business, because it is a page where people share stuff as well as positive reviews about your entity.
