Researching your target niche

I've been doing some research over the last few days in my target niche, looking into what's hot at the moment.

My main source for research at the moment has been forums and trying to identify trends, what other methods do you use when researching your target Niche's?

I like to go away from my computer to spot great niches, and then when I have tabulated some possibilities, I return to my laptop for research.

This works great, because you see real people using real products, and isn't that what we are selling to, actual human beings?

I generally just keep my eyes open when I am shopping for groceries, going out to eat, traveling, wherever.

You would be surprised at the really amazingly laser-pointed niches you can uncover with very little competition.

    Good luck,

I read the sites of my "soon-to-be" competitors, at least the ones on the frist page of the results. Sometimes, page 2 also, but not so often.

I click on as many links as I can on their pages and see if there is some consistency on where the links go to. Sometimes that gives me some mroe pages to visit or some keywrds to search through.

I also click the ads on the first page of the results (if there are any) and visit those sites. if I can find out by reading those pages, i will visit the sites of the folks supplying the products.

On occasion, I will go to Wonder Wheel and see if there are any keywords i haven't yet seen. I also use keyword sniper pro which pulls in keyword phrases from google suggest.

Google adwords keyword tool, wonderwheel, trends and related searches to find out traffic stats and dig into untapped niches. Then head over to market samurai to do some keyword competition research. Lots of work but with a little automation macros can be set and forget. I'm finding profitable niches every day through this system.

Also find quite a few ideas by checking out trends on amazon, twitter and other news sites to find out what's popular.

Oh and subscribe to authority rss feeds in your niche and read daily to find new sub niches to get into and content to add.

What value can you add? You can make money in so many niche's. You will do best making sites in the niches you are most interested in and passionate about.

The best research tool you have is the one keeping your ears apart.

Observe real life, look at a wide array of magazines and newsletters (not just the digital ones). Archives you can access via a public library (at least in most of the USA) are excellent.

If you can lay hands on the physical issues, even better. Look for ads that run for long periods of time. For example, there's an ad in one of my fishing magazines for a boat accessory. The ad features a pretty girl in a bikini. That ad has been running - unchanged, except for the addition of a website address - long enough for that pretty girl to be a grandmother.

If you are niche hunting in the mass market, pay attention to pop culture. For example, there's been a recent proliferation in shows about storage units, and what people uncover in them. Watch for trends in TV and movie ratings and rankings.

Keyword tools should be your last stop.

Keep a small notepad with you. I did this when I first started out, gotten away from it but need to go back to it. Throughout the day ideas will come to you, if your like me they will be long forgotten if I don't write them down. Take your list and find the ones with enough interest to pursue using adwords keyword tool. Then check out the competition, I like to use NicheMarketFinder cuz its free (and i like free) and seems to give good results, dont know the URL off hand but there is a link in my sig to my site that links to it. Then cross em off you list or add them to the list of future keywords to use.

      Thanks Josh!

My memory is not good at all, writing notes is something I do, also have a big whiteboard for ideas and planning.

I don't think i will add value to your question but even i managed to identify niches with the ways ppl said before, at the end i didn't want to go on with things i didn't like. So top paying niches are fine but the ones you like are even better because you could convince others way better and the quality of your text would be from your head and not a spinner or other content creation methods
