    You've got to be confident.

    It's the perception they put across that they're all smug rich arseholes that attracts the majority of their audience.

    I mean, let's face it.... if you've got a killer product, you don't need to find VC on some show. Most (not all, but most) of what ends up on there is total shit and they know it.

        Basically there's 5 investors who are worth over £1 billion pounds between them who get pitched to so they can invest their own money into the pitchers company. They get asked for anywhere from £10k to £260k.

          This is one of my favourite programs. I must say this series seems to be attracting some strange pitches! The guys with the sewn in line in a double sheet to keep partners on their side of the bed! The 'green' computer guy that was offering them to break even in 15-20 years or the guys with the condenser that made water - great for places with a waer shortage - just plug in to electric...oh hang on!

            Agreed.. Dragons Den is one of the best shows to hit tv..

            Has anyone pitched to VCs/Angels in the past? Is there much embellishment to the process on the show?

                You might say it is straight talk, but in some cases you can see it is clearly arrogance.

                I mean richpeck says that most of the products are mediocre, but it is clearly all designed and choreographed in such a way as to create a certain perception.

                Those people who get to make their pitch on telly must be selected from thousands and thousands and some ideas have a very big potential.


                I wouldn't comment on the apprentice because Sir Alan Sugar is different, he is much more grounded to earth and stuff

                while these guys are insulting when they do not need to, they put the pressure up when there is no necessity to do so and most importantly from a viewers perspective they send the message that they are in some ivory tower, holier than thou and thanks to that position they have the right to be demoralising.

                The relevance to all this to internet marketing is whether such a technique works. We have seen it with simon cowell before and these guys seem to be nothing more than the simon cowells of investment.

                That is what I mean by in your face. Not unnecessarily harsh criticism but the hyperbolisation of criticism.

                  Remember this is a TV show.

                  How they act on TV is not what they are like in real life. Certainly there are elements of their personality on the show, but it is a show and they are playing a role -- one that is designed to get eyeballs.

                  A lady that was on the show posted here a few months ago with her thoughts, you should dig up the thread there was a lot of great info in it.

                  You said "The relevance to all this to internet marketing is whether such a technique works", to answer that question first we have to identify the technique.

                  I would say it is not the "hyperbolisation of criticism", but conflict -- the heart of all good stories -- that is the real technique at work here.

                  They use conflict (manufactured on the show) to create drama and get eyeballs on the screen. They're not being harsh to prove a point, or because "that's how rich people are", they just want ratings.

                  So, does it work? And how can it be applied to Internet marketing?

                  Conflict as a tool in story is as old as time and yes it works -- just look at the 3-act structure for a movie -- there's a good reason why they all follow the same structure. As for Dragons Den specifically, just look at the ratings.

                  How can it be applied to Internet marketing? Well, using stories (with inherent conflict) in your copy and product launches is a good start.

                  Go a bit deeper and start looking at your actual character... the character that produces your info products... what's the story there? It's no coincidence that we all know the stories of the "gurus" in Internet marketing. They have carefully constructed their stories and deliberately told them in specific ways

    Do you mean that attitude eminating from the Dragons side?

    If it is then you have to remember that it's still a show, and they have to add entertainment value to it.

    Also, perhaps that attitude HAS helped them to get to where they are.
