Setting up an Affiliate program for a more traditional style online business

Hey there guys.

I consider the marketing on here to be very different to 90% of the rest of the marketing that takes place online. I think that's very obvious.

In light of that, how would you IM'ers handle setting up an affiliate program for a more traditional online business wanting to get affiliates for their own product that they market online for about $25 a month?

By traditional i mean they don't do long sales copy, they don't do hype, the furthest they go is a half baked squeeze page sort of

Also, what is the best software to use that isn't going to bankrupt a small country but will do the job for maybe a couple hundred affiliates, if they are lucky? Something that makes it easy to track payments for them?

Any tips for attracting the best type of affiliates for that kind of business? I only really know what i have seen here and affiliate marketing isn't my expertise but it sure is half the crew here so I'd really appreciate some advice.

And what is an attractive % to give them of each sale if the costs are say $5 out of a $25 electronic sale?

Thanks for your help with this, much appreciated!

Scott

Affiliates are spoiled by digital products paying 50%+ of the sale, your 20% would be close to the high end for physical products. Often that 50% can be for the sale of a teaser product that has a higher paying back end that might not give an affiliate cut. Membership sites commonly offer a percentage of all future sales as well as the initial sign up fee.

CPA lead sales always consider the average lifelong customer value and may pay more than the initial buyer expenditure for the lead.

The smallest scale approach to start with could be a self managed affiliate program recruiting customers and others who stumble across the site, using off the shelf software.

I used to have an affiliate program for my custom shirt sites. Then one day my sites were hacked and I had to rebuild them. I didn't put the affiliate program back up yet. I didn't really get a lot of people to join anyway and none of them made a sale. I keep meaning to put it back up, but haven't gotten around to it. I was thinking of joining ShareASale as a merchant and let them run it.

I was using the idevaffiliate software and I really liked it. I would use it again if I restart the affiliate program.

My shirts probably average around $15 and I offered a 20% commission. That might have been my problem. There isn't a lot of profit in a low cost physical item.

Idevaffiilate is a great piece of software that won't break the bank. If you want a more robust program that can do just about anything go with Post Affiliate Pro (but you will spend more).

I ended up going with Post Affiliate Pro since it can do alot more for my site.

One other thing to consider....some ecommerce carts out there have a built in affiliate program in them....try volusion.com or big commerce. I have looked at TONS of carts and I have found these to be the best in terms of overall functionality, useability, and robustness of features.

      Good luck!
