Verisign Announces Increase in .com/.net Domain Name Fees

VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world, today announced, effective Jan. 15, 2012, an increase in registry domain name fees for .com and .net, per its agreements with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Verisign announced that as of Jan. 15, 2012, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $7.34 to $7.85 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase from $4.65 to $5.11.
In turn, expect your registrar to raise their prices as well.

Thats the way it is, prices go up all the time. Why I remember when gas was under $2 a gallon, as was milk. This is something to be expected and dealt with.

That's nothin'. I remember when gas was 15 cents a gallon, a meal at a diner was a nickel, and a domain only cost 25 cents.

I remember when gas was 24.9 cents at Sinclair (Dinosaur), could eat at Woolworth's counter for under a buck, but I've never seen domains at anything under $7.00

P.S. I remember when cigarettes were at .25 and the government imposed taxes that raised the price to .50 Everyone said they were going to Quit

The currencies of the world are decreasing in value... Prices of virtually everything are increasing...
Time to buy gold, not domains!

How much do you think this will cause the registrars to raise their prices? Another $0.50 cents, $1 dollar?

It is time to register the important domain names that make our money for the next 5-10 years maybe.

domain is one of our needs, and yeah that's not a big surprise when it comes up. we better save our fav. domain from now and register for multiple years (like other said)

I use to pay $100 per domain when I first started registering domains so they are still a bargain to me.

Actually I would not mind seeing domain registration going back to the $100 a year level. Would eliminate the majority of the sites mucking up the search engines.

Ah luckily its not that much of a big deal, its only $0.50 or so, so im sure not many people will mind this change.

Peanuts, especially when averaged out over a 1 year lease period. Though I'll look at locking in my domains for a 3-5 year lease before the price does go up all the same.

That's sad news. The increase in price of domain names are higher in .net than .com. Does this mean that there are more users of .net than .com? Are these prices finalized or still subject to change?
