How do you deal with media opportunities?

As an early adopter of Fiverr, I'm sometimes contacted by PR firms or media outlets to do interviews. Sounds great, right?

What you may not know is that these people generally have the story written before they talk to me and if I don't fit their profile, it's all for nought. And they do the story on their terms, not mine. I rarely get any publicity for my company or blogs.

Or this: I was contacted for a in-studio interview on Fox Business channel, but only after emails back and forth did the booker think to ask if I was located in Manhattan! (Er, Northern California...)

I'm no celebrity but I figure some of you guys have been around long enough to have dealt with the media in some capacity. I'm thinking about just saying no from here on out because despite the "glamour" I'm not getting anything out of this.

Make sure you know what they want to ask you.. and prepare.

Despite them having a story ready, still try to pick 3 things you want to get across and remember, as the saying goes...

"Tell them, Tell Them What You Told Them, And Then Tell Them Again"

Chances are they will edit out anything they don't want to use unless it's live, but still worth a shot.

Get the contact details of producers etc and ask them if you can contact them from time to time with updates and scoops. They will probably agree or put you in touch with someone on the newsdesk.

Everytime "something" happens with Fiverr, you have a foot in the door for more exposure.

Good luck if you decide to do it.

Absolutely, first thing with any marketing stuff (affiliate or otherwise) is know what they are going to ask you. In terms of media opportunities you have a general idea of the types of things they are going to ask, if you are going to them.

Audience is everything, even if they are asking questions.

I would take every opportunity presented to me to get on any media outlet. If one of them works out for you it will probably have been worth going through all of the ones that didn't.

Oh yeah, be sure you get a shirt that promotes your site if you do get on TV.

Maybe you can try to present yourself under such a uncomfortable situation which we have already been doing everyday. However, I understand.

I don't know. But I have a question for you: How do you deal with people who have problems with reading comprehension on forum threads?

    Seriously though...

WF Ron Douglas here on the forum comes to mind, as I know he's dealt a bit with the media. Mayne he'll pop in, as well as others with experience.

Also, it might be worth seeking out your own opportunities, rather than waiting for those with the pre-written articles to contact you.

    Cheers,
    Becky

I look at it as surrealist theater.

Or like my cat that meows at me every time I speak. I have no idea what he's trying to say, either.

      I can't multi-quote worth a dang, so:

This seems a good time to remind people of the existence of HARO (Help A Reporter Out), http://www.helpareporter.com

    Hallo fluffy,

You have opened such a nice line of arguement.I personally believe the media is a great tool. But in its absense,we now have social media. It has more power. If you hit a bulls eye, then you get exponential iteractions for a single item,be it a video, article or just a fad.

I wouldn't give up so easily. I haven't been contacted for interviews by anyone as big as Fox, but I have had good luck with internet publications, magazines, book authors and local television.

Consider this before you say no: it only takes one good result, just one time, to make up for all the times you experienced poor results.
