Need help with Digiresults (screening affiliates)

by DJ PQ3
21 replies
Hello Warriors,

I would like to know from someone who is using DR successfully in their business the best way to screen affiliates to help weed out the scammers.

I have lost a few bucks initially with DR due to shady affiliates buying my products then refunding through pay pal in order to keep the commission.

I would like some tips on the best way to screen affiliates before I approve them in the future.

Thanks in advance.

It's very important that you do NOT approve every
affiliate unless you do a little work to know more about
them. If you don't, you are pretty much setting
    yourself up for trouble.

I provided some very helpful tips on dealing with the
problem of scammers for those using WarriorPlus and
DigiResults in the below thread right here in this forum:

Thanks Kingsley. Your post was very helpful. Here is the e-mail template I came up with.

Thank you for your interest in our program. Before we can approve your request we need some more information from you.

      1. How much online marketing experience do you have? Months, years, etc.

      2. What traffic methods do you have experience with? PPC,e-mail
      marketing, etc.

      3. What traffic method(s) will use to you promote our product?

Once we receive your response it will be reviewed and you will be
notified of your status within 24 hrs.

      Thank you.

Here is the one response I've gotten so far.

Thank you for your attention to me.
I am interested in promoting your products because your product is very interesting and unique.
I will promote your products to my online friend, my college friend, my brother, my neighbors and everyone I know through facebook, twitter, forums and my blog.
I will do my best to promote your product.
please approve my apply affiliate as soon as possible.
      thank you so much

I could be wrong but... based on the questions I ask in the e-mail this response is not sufficient.

What do you guys think? Please leave any and all feedback as it is helping me to fine tune my approval process.

Thanks again for you help fellow warriors.

I guess you know exactly what we think

Listen to your gut feelings: not sufficient to trust... don't trust. It's that simple.

I used to send emails like your a while ago but then having similar replies like yours I gave up: it's time consuming. So I just reject them: all of them sign up with obscure yahoo mail IDs.

This is very interesting - I just Googled this text as I've had two different people (or same person with two email addresses) use this text in response to my simple request "Thanks for your request. Before I approve it, please could you tell me a little about how you intend to promote FillSlammer [my PowerPoint Add-in on DigiResults] or give me a few other examples of things you have promoted already."

I've had, I guess, about 100 requests to join my program mostly from hotmail accounts, and I've only had four or five respond and the same use of this text makes me very suspicious.

I think DigiResults has a good system because of the automatic instant payments, but it is obviously attracting bogus affiliates. I think I shall also stick to only approving people I actually know.

Well isn't there a waiting period before affiliates get paid out? I always assumed that's why affiliates get paid 30 to 45 days after the sale... please correct me if I'm wrong.

With DigiResults and WarriorPlus affiliate systems, the
affiliates get paid instantly. This model is HEAVEN for the
genuine affiliates who want to see INSTANT results of
their work. Sadly it's also heaven for the scammers who
want to "steal" while it becomes "hell" for merchants
      in this case.

Stop using DigiResults and WarriorPlus altogether? I also
had this question in my mind for a while when I got
attached by the scammers too, but the answer is NO.
There are ways to solve the problem, as indicated in my
      referenced thread below:

I have a simple rule: if I don't know you, I will not approve you. Both at Digiresults and at WSOPlus.

    Thanks Istvan.

I have another question for you.

What is your rule of thumb when it comes to approving affiliates? What email id's do you prefer etc.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4513379].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Istvan Horvath
I prefer people that I know. For example, from here (as a respected WF member); from other places where I can see their contribution etc. Not anonymous, obscure "id"s. I want REAL people, who are business-minded, using ethical methods... you know all the answers, don't you?

I know it is unfortunate that some idiot released a script and even more idiots are using it to sign up and get instant refunds - and this whole thing hurts potential honest and hard-working affiliates. For me it's not worth spending a lot of time to figure out who is scam and who is not. I just reject everybody en masse, unless I know you. This way I may have less sales but don't have to deal with scammers, idiots etc.

Here's what you do... REJECT whoever sent this email!

I get the sames ones with similar wording all the time. It's your typical "lazy affiliate response." I like the email you came up with above and I use a similar one and have it set up to be delivered through I-Contact whenever anyone applies to join my affiliate program in Digiresults.

What concerns me is I recently had someone apply and then respond to me with an intelligent email so I ultimately approved them for my program. Well, fast forward a few weeks later and Paypal has reversed one of their referred sales for, what I assume, is a purchase using a stolen credit card. I contacted this affiliate asking them to refund their commission, and got no response. I've since had to open a Paypal dispute against them AND one other affiliate.

This is becoming a pain and I'm going to take Istvan's advice above and now only approve those I know and I'm going to screen more heavily. Too bad DG has become a breeding ground for this crap and I wish they could do more about it.

What if you have a no refund policy?

Will that weed out the scammers?

With digital downloads they are not protected by PayPal's policies that can mandate a refund if a product is not received.

The problem is that it's NOT the scammers who are asking
for the refunds. They use STOLEN credit cards or compromised
Paypal accounts to pay from THEIR affiliate links, get the
instant commission before the real owners of the stolen cards
or compromised Paypal find out and file disputes.

So, yes, you may win if you fight the disputes because of
Paypal's stance on digital downloads, but you KNOW the best
to do is chase the scammer to get your money back while
        refunding the STOLEN funds.

          Hi Kingsley

I thought the scammer's commissions would also be taken from his paypal account when a refund is issued by the product owner?

Yes I've noticed this pattern. Since first posting this I have received that same response from several of these crack head scammers!

Oh well, If they are going to be that lazy & use the same response it just makes it easier for me to weed them out.

Thanks again fellow Warriors for all of your feedback.

OK, I understand. With a stolen card you'll probably lose your dispute.

Just opened a DigiResults account to see the inside.

Some ideas - none foolproof, but better than nothing:

Under Advanced Settings | Affiliate programme page

you can have a link to put in your affiliate terms. Have strong terms making sure any and all issues and disputes are decided where you want them. I'd include a massive liquidated damages penalty for fraud - even if not enforceable it might make a scammer think twice and to move on to an easier target.

Have similar information in the pending approval email. The goal is scare some potential scammers away from your account.

Ask for a real name, physical address and telephone number to be emailed to you before an affiliate account is approved.

Even if you don't plan on calling anyone, this may also scare away some scammers.

      Don't approve free email accounts.

Check if the IP address in the email that comes to you matches the address they provided.

Block certain countries from accessing your website.

When I get a request to become an affiliate, I send them this letter:

Thank you for applying to become an affiliate for my products on DigiResults.

What attracted you to my products? And how do you intend to promote them?

    Best Regards,

    Britt Malka

You can instantly dismiss any affiliate requests from yahoo (or similar) email addresses.

In particular, requests that come from a person with a single name and then some autogenerated name for the email address, or even more obvious when there are numbers in the email address.

Any affiliate that has any worth will have a proper email address, ie: their own domain.

Using the above filter, you can instantly dismiss about 99% of the requests and for the remainder, you can send them an email where they need to respond with very specific information and not just send back a generic reply stating they want to promote your products (without actually mentioning any of the product names)
