To blog or Not to blog that is the question

Should I have a blog on my wordpress site or create a separate blog outside of my wordpress site to drive traffic.

Should I just submit articles to article directories and that's it.

Your question is confusing me and I am not getting what you are actually trying to ask. I think you are trying to ask that whether one should have blog on the same site or create a blog on other wordpress site?
Your website should have a blog on your website for the better ranks and building authority for the site. But, you can always make blog on web 2.0 sites to drive traffic and making backlinks

article submission and leading a blog have different purposes, and both are needed. You can have a blog on subdomain or in a folder, i.e.:
www.yoursite.com - main site
1) myblog.mysite.com - your blog
OR
2) www.yoursite.com/blog/ - your blog

Or even get a new domain for blog. If you don't want to handle too many domains, perhaps option 1 or 2 are the best.
