Setting up a Free Download/Report

I must be overcomplicating this, because im trying to think of the system of what im doing as well as figure out the technical end of WHAT im doing...

Could someone please break down the process of setting up a free report for download, after someone signs up for our list using wordpress/and an autoresponder service (i use mailchimp, but it doesnt have to be mailchimp specific, im sure they're all pretty much the same thing)

Step 1. Create report, optin form and embed code into proper place on website... Check.

Thank you.

Sounds like you have your optin page set up.

Take your report and zip it, and upload it to your server through cPanel or FTP. Note the link to the report, which should be something similar to this:
    http://www.MYSITE.com/MYREPORT.zip

Now create a second page on your site that says something to the effect of thank you for subscribing, this is what to expect from our mailings, etc. and on that page, you will put a link saying something like:

Click here to download your free report

You will hyperlink that text with the link from the earlier step.

Now in your autoresponder, there will be a place to put in an URL where you want to send people when they confirm. Put the link to the download page you just created.

    I hope that helps?

you can do it a couple of different ways.

the easiest is just to set the thank you page for your form to direct people to a page on your site with the download link. you will get more fake email address this way, but not to many because people dont know how the book will be delivered so they will usually use a true email address.

next, if you are using single optin list, then you could just put the link to the DL page in the first email you send to them via autoresponder. ie...the thank you for subscribing email.

if you are using double optin. it will just go one step further back since the first email will be a confirmation email from your AR service.

also, be sure to put noindex, no follow meta tags on your DL page or it will get listed in the search engines and people will just bypass your optin form.

Type your domain name into your browser, add a slash and then the name of your zip file like so

        http://yourdomainname.com/productname.zip

If you have used a folder it will be

        http://yourdomainname.com/foldername/productname.zip

hey i think i got it to work by uploading the .zip file directly to the wordpress media center. then i used that direct download link.

will this work the same way as uploading it directly to the server through cpanel and the stuff you are talking about?

or do i have to do something else to protect the contents from being found in the search engines and bypassing the optin process...?

I never did the WP media center way you did, but another way to do this is to put your file into a folder and upload that folder along with your report to your server. Name the folder something obscure and don't name the zip file the same as your report. This would make it very unlikely it would get found in a search.
