What is "Web 3.0"??

This a quote from PC Mag:

"To many, Web 3.0 is something called the Semantic Web, a term coined by Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the (first) World Wide Web. In essence, the Semantic Web is a place where machines can read Web pages much as we humans read them, a place where search engines and software agents can better troll the Net and find what we're looking for. I was always lead to believe that 1.0 was standard internet browsing , 2.0 was social media and 3.0 is use of mobile devices.

In the design side, I always feel that web1.0 had a very "blocky" design and very static.. while web2.0 is simpler, using a gradient color, sometimes using rounded corner, etc.

From the content, web 1.0 is very static, web 2.0 give an addition on user-generated content (social network, blog, video sites, etc), and web 3.0 should implement more on computer-generated content.

In the future, webX.X will outsmart us human .

I have to say that Wbe 3.0 is a term I have heard of, but until I read some of the posts on here, I had very little knowledge of what it catually was.

I'm now officially coining the phrase "Web 4.0" and my definition is:

"The bringing together of a new online Taxonomy whereby users of all internet connected devices create relationships between online and local devices and assets to allow for shared bookmarking of online and local content, including video, audio, applications and services, with devices such as televisions and portable video-capable electronic devices sharing user experience and recommendations across installed applications and online communities with the purpose of building a more inter-connected and shared access to content and metadata to allow for rich new relationship tracking and value delivery."

Funny theories. I just wonder what the future holds. Sharing things with people you know and other social elements will become more and more important.

Web 1.0 is "content produced by the people who own and operate internet servers." Basically, people who have their own hosting. Before you could put content on the internet, you had to construct what amounted to a broadcast station for your message.

Web 2.0 is "content produced by subscribers to internet services." Basically, instead of owning and operating your own website, you become a user at someone else's and create your own space on it where you can broadcast your content.

Web 3.0 is "content produced automatically." Instead of actively producing content for the internet, you just do whatever it is you do, and it becomes content posted on the internet.

Imagine that you take a picture with your camera phone.

The Web 1.0 way of sharing it is that you upload this picture to your own web server and insert code on a page somewhere to display it.

The Web 2.0 way of sharing it is to upload it to Facebook and identify the album it goes into.

The Web 3.0 way of sharing it is to do nothing, because the picture is automatically uploaded to the cloud where rules you configure are applied to send it out on various social networks of your choosing.

Web 3.0 has massive privacy implications and people are afraid of it, but you can see the early edges of it with the integration of social networks, e.g. the ability to autopost your Twitter updates to Facebook.

Simply put, Web 2.0 is a perceived transition of the web to web applications. Web 2.0 is the next generation of technology solutions where interactive content is the norm. There is no agreement on exactly what Web 2.0 means, depending on who you are speaking with, you may receive different explanations. At it's heart, Web 2.0 is about the maturity of the Web and businesses that are thriving online. While many refer to Web 2.0 as companies that employ powerful web technologies, the key components of the new web are said to include: the web as a platform, collaboration, and syndication.

As for Web 3.0 it is generally used to imply the "social web" where there is an interaction, give and take.
