20% of visitors to one site of mine is coming from mobile devices.

This is about the same percentage of people using Chrome, with 24% using Firefox and then 29% using IE.

This is actually a rather significant number and makes me wonder how conversions can be increased by optimizing sites (wordpress) for mobile users..

    George,

I think you are seeing the statistics for yourself on the use of mobile sites. Is continuing to grow everyday. Having a mobile site is getting to be a must, or at the very least, a definite option to include to what you are doing already.

    Thanks,

    John

To increase the traffic from mobile users, you can generate a QR code for your website and promote it. Mobile users can use that code to visit your website directly.

I personally think it's the mobile device's job to display my content, not my job to alter the content for the mobile device.

That said, I do think we should be looking at the reality of more and more people accessing our sites with a touch screen instead of a mouse, which means we should be making larger navigation areas with more space between them.

Wouldn't you much rather have control over how your site looks and functions on a mobile device? Even Google started offering automatically generated mobile versions of every page in the search results and most of them looked like rubbish.

It's a reality that mobile is going to overtake desktop usage in the very near future. For that reason it will be vital for you to have a proper mobile optimized version of your website. The mobile website will be the new website so it's not something people can ignore for much longer and it's not something you should compromise on.

I think that we should allow evolution to take care of this. Soon all people with fingers like tootsie rolls or Polish sausages will become unsuitable as mates and their offspring will die off naturally because they can't function in society. (buying food, operate computer systems etc...)

    For me, it depends.

If my goal is to have returning visitors, I'd probably offer a mobile version. But for conversions, I've tweaked and tested every single part of my site's layout, and switching to a mobile layout for 30% of my visitors (the % on my big site) would likely kill my conversions.

Of course, I test everything, so I should test this, too.

Actually you can have both - there are some simple scripts out there that can tell if a person is on a mobile device. It then feeds them the proper page according to what they are using.

A couple of weeks ago, I would have argued that people will always use their computers instead of a mobile device if they really want to do any serious searching for products or information. I figured people used the mobile devices to look for local stuff like if they were out and about and wanted to find a restaurant/mall/ski shop etc…

Then my stepson mentioned how much he loves his smartphone because even when he is at home with his computer in the next room he's starting to use his phone more and more to search for stuff because he can use it without having to get off the couch.

I would optimize my site in a heartbeat, there are plugins for Wordpress which automatically switch to a mobile-theme if they detect a mobile device like android, iphone etc.

The problem is only...this plugin seems to have trouble with the W3TC cache plugin and its likely i would break something else...which i simply cannot risk.

I agree with CDDarklock this should not be our task, the device itself should display a site optimally on its own.
