A/B Split Testing for Amazon Sales

greetings

i really want to begin split testing on my Amazon product review site to increase conversion rates.

i have used multiple A/B platforms in the past: visualwebsiteoptimizer, google webmaster tools as well as Max A/B Plugin.

they all require you to emplace your "conversion" tracking code on a landing page of your own network. meaning if someone clicks a link to Amazon from my site, they would 1st have to be directed to a "thank you" page on my site.

that kills sales and people say screw it when this happens.

i know i cannot place my tracking code on Amazon, but is there a way i can still track conversions without having to waste their business?

someone mentioned once something about uploading a .php file and it would catch their data before they were sent to Amazon.

i'm open to all suggestions

As an affiliate, your job is to get the click to Amazon, right?

So that's the conversion you want to track.

You can do that by using an intermediate page that loads and then immediately redirects to the destination page. You can track the number of clickthroughs by looking at the number of times that page was loaded. Or you could put your conversion code on the page.

The redirect time is less than a second, and may be quick enough that clickers won't even notice it.

    I agree with John.

You want to test SALES, not clicks to Amazon. Your review needs to pre-sell the product, and to do this you need to add value, etc.

If you want to A/B test on two different pages or posts, both sending traffic to Amazon, then you could do it with different affiliate tracking IDs. Amazon will give you 100 tracking codes, so that's one option. Setup something like "mytrack-20" and "mytrackvariant-20".

There is also a wordpress split testing plugin that I own a copy of an it apparently can track clicks to third party sites. I am not sure how they accomplish it, but the plugin is something that I bought via WSO a while ago and it's still alive. The author has updated the plugin since the WSO launch, so I naturally assume this will get you the newest version:

i appreciate your input however i want to test whether 350 word or 800+ word copy works better on the same product review.

there in that case, i care more about testing amount of clicks.

does any know or can anyone explain how i can create that re-direct page John McCabe mentioned?

You want to split-test the conversion of different content.

It is quite easy. You need a couple of content variations matched with a couple of different Amazon tracking id´s and a simple plugin

This is how I do it:

          (Assuming you are using WP)

          1) Install plugin Quick Adsense

          2) goto Settings, Quick adsense, Un-Check all positional assignment boxes, on appearance I choose Posts

          3) scroll down to Ads on Post boxes, enter any html code, a full post with html formatting, images, etc is fine (I use this on a blank post, only showing the Ad box content to visitors.) Don´t forget too include a new Amazon tracking code into each content box. IMPORTANT - since you will probably have formatting inside your content, choose "None" in the alignment box.

          4) Create a post with a headline (same will be used for all posts shown) and blank post content. insert the plugin shortcode <!--RndAds--> into the post, save.

          Done.

Not perfect but quick. You visitors will now be greeted with randomized content. I find this simple system works best with just two ad boxes used. Since it is random it does not change the content for every other pageload, but in the long run it does show 50% of each.

I don't have time to dig it up right now, but it's been posted here several times. It can be done with either javascript or php. I prefer the php version, because there are still people who surf with javascript turned off.

If you don't find it with a good search, try posting in the programmers section, or maybe web design. You should get a fairly quick answer without getting lost in the general conversation...

    Hi

there is an Event tool in google analytics that can be attached to click on link.
If you add a unique name on this Events you can look at Content->Events and see which link user clicks when goes to amazon site.

I cant post link in message but you can find one when search for "install google analytics link events" in google

    hope that it will help

I think what Chris Thompson said will be the easiest to start with.

Using an Amazon tracking ID is very easy and as for the length of the review I think I'd be more concerned with images links vs. text, above the fold or lower down the page than (say) word count.

Not to mention the fact that a longer review also gives you'll also hit more longer-tail keywords.
