Google Analytics traffic shows less than my stats in Hostgator, why?

Hi all -

I have been wondering for a while now, why does my unique traffic in my Hostgator cPanel stats show higher than my Google Analytics traffic?

And - how does a WP theme work that has a place to put the Google Analytics snippet code into the theme settings? Does this automatically add it to every new page/post I publish?

If it does add the proper tracking code to each page, what happens if I also have code in some of the pages that I added manually, before I had the theme installed that had a place for it in the theme settings. Will this cause incorrect tracking?

Thanks for your help!

If they have cookies or javascript disabled then analytics doesn't track them. At least that's what I have found. But I don't have striking differences between my stats.

Agreed, and on top of that from my understanding. Awstats picks up on bots where as google analytics tries to only pick up on actual visitors.

My differences in one site are 5,500 uniques showing in Hostgator stats. In Analytics, it's only showing 4,400.

Wouldn't that be considered a 'big' difference?

A better question is why my host gator affiliate sales stats show $4,000 and I receive a $50 check from them. Affiliates be warned.

      Ouch... That's crazy.

I too have the same issue with Awstats and Analytics. It was kind of disappointing to install Analytics on a new site and find out that the small amount of organic traffic that I thought it had was possibly not there at all.

The reason is that analytics is relying on a client receiving javascript, whereas cpanel is able to track the actual hit to their server. It's natural that the latar will be higher for numerous reasons, ranging from disabled javascript, bots, etc.

From my experience it's better to go by the Google analytics stats for a more realistic assessment of hits.

Try to find what unique visitor means for Google and for Hostgator.
Probably they have different approach related to how they define a unique visitor.

Google analytics is more for business intelligence and awstats more for system admins. So awstats get the true visitors cause its logged straight on your host server vs Google analytics which is hosted on google servers and they use cookies to gather data..Cookies are dependent on javascripts to be enabled on users computers and if they are disabled (abt 5% of the internet users) then they will not be tracked at all...Also note, that Google analytics made a change last year so that if users are logged in to gmail while doing a google search, the keyword referral data will not be provided in GA...some challenges for SEO marketers like myself...

Google analytics data is the most accurate description of actual user you are getting whereas many hosting programs like awstats shows all the visits you which include robots like spiders and scrapbox.

For one of my site i get about 4k+ visitors in google analytics and 8k+ visitors in awstats. Its because due to high ranking more and more software programs come to my site which are not actual users.
