Static site+ wp blog or just wp blog?

Hello warriors,

I am going to build a site for a real estate agent, and am wondering if I should go with a static site+wordpress blog or just wordpress site with static pages and blog.

I've used wordpress to build a few blogs. But I've run into some problems with it as well, between my lack of coding knowledge and the fact I always seem to run into problems no one ever has, well, I eventually got annoyed with it and went and bought xsite pro. Xsite pro is pretty nice and let's me do pretty much whatever I want, and gives me better control than I had with wp.

However, wordpress is amazing for seo, which is what I want for this site. i had a freaking "hello world" post indexed in google in under an hour without doing anything, where as my xsite pro built site took several days to get indexed after bookmarking it and having a few articles pointed at it.

So, what do you warriors think I should do, given my teck skill set (or lack of it) Would it even matter seeing how a static site would have a wp blog as well? Also, to do that (static site+blog) if let's say I have mysite.com and I want the blog to be at mysite.com/blog, I would go into cpanel and use fantastico to install wordpress into mysite.com/blog right? =p

PS: Anyone knows a good wp theme for real estate agent? And I'll probably just buy a .info domain to test this stuff around so I don't screw up with the actual site.

"Create a new page, called "Blog" and another one called "Home". Don't add anything to the "blog" page.

In WP Admin, go to Settings -> Reading, and at the top, choose Front Page Displays A Static Page (Home) and Posts Page (Blog). "

Thanks Jeff. One of the problems I had with wp was that it seemed I couldn't make the static "home" page also be the front page (or at least I think so) I seem to recall that I couldn't get the front page and home page to be the same or some such.

But thanks for your suggestion, I'll give it a try. To make a "blog" page without adding anythign to it, should I make it through wordpress (ie, new page -blog) or should I go into the cpanel and make a blog.html file in the mysite.com folder?

Also, since this is a real estate site there will be a "search properties" function, which is done through iframes. But the search box seems to be around 600-800 wide (still playing around with this) which might break many wp themese (and since I lack coding knowledge I wouldn't be able to fix it)

Lastly, you (or anyone else) wouldn't happen to know a nice wp theme suitable for a real estate site/blog?

And yes, wp is better than static site if you can get it to do what you want. But like the search box above, xsitepro allows me to simply change the width of the main panel to be big enough for the search box to fit in, where as a wp theme would just break leaving me with a great desire to smash my monitor after I spend hours trying to fix it. I'll give your idea a try though, on .info test site.

Couple of thoughts come to mind. Will the agent be blogging? If no, I wouldn't use Wordpress. Why is that? Unless you or the agent maintain it, it will get out of date and end up like so many other wordpress sites - hacked.

As far as SEO what does it matter if the site gets indexed in one hour or a week. The real estate agent has a real business that's there today, tomorrow, next year. Getting a page indexed a tad bit sooner doesn't matter. Now if you have definitive proof that wordpress sites rank better than an xsitepro or other static site, then you'd have justification.

There are some good points for static content type sites, especially for an a person in business. I'm new here so can't post a link, but google blog or build for an article on why a content site is probably a better fit.

Remember this is a business site, not some throwaway domain you are trying to pump some quick traffic to. It should be well organized and so people can find what they need. Yes you can build a static like site in Wordpress, but it's still likely to get hacked eventually.

Wordpress is a good tool, but it's not the only tool or in this case likely the right tool.
