Approaching New Clients

I am in the process of identifying potential clients for my social media management business. I've never had to do it before - it's always been recommendations.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should present myself? I don't have any accounts to show apart from my own due to a confidentiality clause, but I'm hoping the clients will appreciate that.

I'm just a bit nervous about how to express myself in an email. I had hoped to get appointments with the companies but it won't be possible, so I need help

I'd really appreciate any guidance! I've already got my email account set up and a signature with all my social links, which looks quite good.

Thank you

I think the best advice I can give you is to just do it. You will find your way and hit your stride through experience. some people who do not buy from you will still take the time to provide some valuable advice. 4 training, trying to create some situations in your life where you are interacting with people. see if some friends will help you practice on them. but above all make sure you start and start soon.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I would suggest you don't use email. You'll just get deleted...at least the vast majority of the time.

Try this: Grab a local newpaper - they are usually FULL of ads for local businesses. This tells you that a) they are willing to spend money on advertising and b) that they don't know local newspapers are almost always lower ROI than PPC or SEO.

Go through the newspaper and call them on the phone.

If you get them, say something like:

"I run a marketing business here in gainesville and I'm calling to see if you're interested in hearing about how I can help you get new customers using online marketing? If you're not, I'd like to introduce myself anyway - I like to get to know the other small businesses in the area..."

I know you said social media management. That's fine - it is in high demand. But I can tell you from experience - most small local businesses don't really know what that means. You'll have much better luck framing things in terms of "help you get more customers using your website" than with "social media management." This is LESS true when you get into the larger businesses...which tend to have more sophisticated marketing.

I offer these suggestions based on 3 years (in my fourth) of successful marketing to small local businesses for SEO, PPC, email marketing and social media (FB and TWitter).

One thing is for sure - spend an hour a day making phone calls and following up with emails, and you'll get new customers.

Also try and be "yourself". I think people will be more relaxed that way.
