Why buy DVD.com? It's all about Blue Rays now. Seems a little backwards thinking to me.

I agree, seems like a pointless purchase to me. People already know what Netflix is, it's not like they are going to gain any more traffic/sales from the acquisition of that domain.

I guess DVD is easy to remember, it may get some residual traffic from people that type it into the browser but I agree seems pointless when they already have a brand that everyone already recognises.

I wish I was the one that registered it though, I wonder if he got it for $9.99 lol.

Because the most profitable portion of their company is DVD rental, not BluRay.

And people still use the wording DVD, even if buying other stuff...

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

I always thought a blueray was a type of DVD anyway? Maybe not... Sure look the same though.

VERY true. This must have been a major factor in them buying it,

Strange. DVDs are last-gen. And from what I can gather Netflix is doing everything they can to get out of the DVD business and into a 100% streaming model.

(Although it could be a clever move re-directing DVD.com to their streaming service.)

Well Netflix apparently has a lot of last-gen customers, including me. I have no desire to purchase bluray equipment and I live in the country where streaming is not an option.

A shareholder letter lists the company's U.S. DVD subscriptions at 11.17 million at the end of Q4, bringing in a total of $370 million in revenue, with a profit of $194 million. Compare this to domestic streaming, which represents $476 million in revenue with a mere $52 million profit, and it's clear that the DVD rental market is still quite strong.

    I dunno, $10.69?

That's what it would cost to buy a domain on namecheap.

    Ha ha, just a joke...

Is it really all about Blu Ray? From what I see DVDs are still doing pretty well. Blu Ray didn't do enough to clearly mark itself as the "next generation" thing. Now it's just kind of there to make you feel like you have the next best thing.

Killer domain! Netflix wants to be the go-to
site for dvd rentals/purchases. Blue ray isn't
in every home yet, so dvds are still king. Most
computers can play them, PS3 & Xbox 360s can
play them, every home has a dvd player of some
    kind...

either corner the market of eliminate/position your
competition. Netflix did just that. Think of how many
searches the word dvd has per day, per month, per
    year...

True .. it's a killer domain name. They can't go wrong with it. They could always get their money back on it if they sold it.
