What a reasonable charge for an article writer? Say for a 500 word original article?

I would never pay less than $5 for a 500 word article, since I would fear poor quality articles. It really depends on what kind of quality you're looking for, and how easy the articles are to write. I would suggest putting up a project on any outsourcing marketplace and seeing what kind of bids you get. Remember not to trust samples provided since, in my experience, many people use fake ones to get hired. Happy hiring!

I currently charge low prices, mainly because I haven't built my portfolio to charge higher prices. But if you are looking for web content, or any other type of content it is best to find high quality content.

The reason people charge $1 per 100 words is simply because they take less time than someone who charges $10 per 100 words.

Someone who charges $10 per 100 words will do real research, like go to their local library, go to their local bookstore, and find real credible sources online.

I have asked a lot of advice about how to become a high quality writer, and the norm is that most people who charge $1 per 100 words, is people who will rewrite unreliable articles they find on the internet, that won't do your target market much good.

It is best to pay someone reputable what they deserve to give you an article that is worth it for your readers, and worth it for you, to keep your readers around.

If they are reading a rehashed article, that they can find anywhere else on the internet, they probably already read that information somewhere else and they will click the back button, and forget about you.

This is the key thing really, when it comes to low priced articles.

For most native English-speaking writers, $3 is not going very far, so if somebody's offering you 500 word articles at that rate, you've really got to ask yourself, "how much time and effort are they going to be putting into each article."

To get up to $12 an hour, they'd need to crank out 2000 words an hour, which means they'd just be mindlessly typing without any pause to read or think. That means no research, no grammar checking, no checking for spelling mistakes, etc.

Which most likely means content that nobody wants to read.

It's just one of those things where if you try to pay too little, you just end up paying more in the long run, as you work day and night trying to fix mistakes. And that's assuming you're not getting burned with Panda-angering DUPLICATE content!

Well, that depends on a couple factors.

What do you need your articles for?

What kind of quality to you require?

What is your budget for a 500 word article?

It really fluctuates... I charge 4 cents per word and my clients are happy to pay it. There are many writers who charge much more than I do. There are also many that charge as low as one cent per word.

No matter who you hire, look at sample and always hire them for a small job before you hire them for big jobs.

What do you want your articles to achieve?

If you want your article writer to build you up into a MASSIVE authority in your niche, hooking people into your content so they're BEGGING you for more, and smartly preselling them - that is, moving them closer to your position and that moment where they feel, "Yes, I need to buy what this guy is selling!"... then you're looking at least $50 an article.

At least, that's close to what I charge.

If you're looking for somebody to rehash the Top 5 of a Google search, just so you can put that rehashed material back into the Top 5 (if you're lucky) and "Wow" your readers with basically the same old material they read in the other Google searches (just put in a different way)...

    ...then $5 is about right.

    Good luck.

OK, taking my tongue out of my cheek just a little bit, what do you really want from your articles? If you just intend to do the same as everybody else, then $5, because when you pay somebody $5, that's basically as much as they are going to do...

... i.e. run a few Google searches and rehash the material they find.

And that is not really going to make you the next "guru" in your niche.

    That's why I ask.

Which is a better investment, long term? Something where you put in $5 and get $10 back, or something where you put in $50 and get $200 back?

The gurus and the authorities in their niches don't see content as merely an attempt to get dribbles of Google traffic per article.

    They are building their REPUTATIONS.

And you just can't do that with $5 articles.

You do not get good things cheap :/. If you pay in the neighborhood of $5 for a writer then you know that they are not going to spend too much time on it because let's face it: its not worth their time. Then there is the whole discussion about hiring writers from fiverr and other freelancing sites and yes the writing rates there aren't too high. But the writers there hardly have any experience about writing stuff that makes an impact. Because any who knows how to write in an interesting and thought provoking manner is not going to have a low self esteem. Writers have to spend a long time building their reputations and their portfolio and at some point you have to pay them for their experience as well as their time.

Then again, all this depends on how much you are willing to spend and what you are trying to accomplish -

Anywhere between $5.00 and $6.00 would be fine for a 500-word article. Of course there are many task providers that are willing to pay even more!
