[Bizarre!] My sample site was stolen in its entirety within 24 hours!

OK, this is TOTALLY bizarre! I put together a new niche website to demonstrate the quality of our work. Less than 24 hours later, somebody from China stole it and put it on a completely new domain totally intact with a domain name registered at GoDaddy!

How the heck did they do this? It has all the plugins and everything. Also, why did they do it? It has all of my payment links intact so if they order, it comes to us.

Can anyone shed light on this? Are there any Chinese warriors who can read the thread and tell me what they are saying?

Should I be mad? I know that it's just a sample, and I would never have known about it, but they copied the tracking code too

Ideas? Thoughts? I mean these people can copy any one of our sites!

      Yeah. I've looked more into it and the page I Google Translated contains many users posting just "filler text" with only the first post containing links to the domain with the copied content. Although the links to the domain do not point to any pages currently existing on the domain (all are 404's). So its as if someone was posting filler spam posts to an earlier site (possibly another stolen site) on that same domain.

      Why did the copy the whole site though? It's odd. But not nearly as odd as keeping the original paypal links in tact.

        All they have done is forward & mask seehuofo.com to led-lantern.net - it's not a copy - it is the exact same site.

        Maybe want to sell the domain to someone who doesn't realise what has been done.

    Unfortunately, there is nothing bizarre about your site being cloned. There are a number of website cloning scripts and website ripper scripts available that can literally clone or rip any targeted site at the push of a few button and no platform is exempt.

    Moreover, one can even go to sites such as Elance, ODesk, etc., and hire people who get paid to clone sites. Right now there are tons of cloned Fiverr sites, cloned Pinterest sites, cloned FaceBook sites, etc., etc., and these cloned sites are exact duplicates of the originals.

    Why do the cloners do it?

    That is obvious!

    Nefarious minds always take shortcuts - be they illegal or unethical - or what some people may classify as immoral.

    Why did they leave your PayPal buttons intact? Maybe they hadn't gotten around to changing them yet. Maybe they had a script that was supposed to auto change the PayPal buttons and it failed. Regardless of the reason why, illegally cloning sites is a common problem.

    To get the offending site removed, you need to follow the steps outlined in the first URL, which is sending a DMCA take down letter to their host and to the search engines. *Don't bother with the 1st step, which is sending an email to the offenders. Why bother?

    As to why did they choose you?

    They likely scraped the search engines looking for niche site builders and you came up on their radar. Conversely, they may be secretly lurking in forums like the WF, looking for websites to rip and found you.

    Thanks guys for all the input OT, I should have looked at that, don't know why I did not think of it. We now know the "how". The "why" is probably so they can use the site as their own sample OR they will try to sell the niche site to someone. Trolls.

      I just wanted to add my input on this subject. Many of the responses here indicate a bit of awe for people being able to clone your website. Do not be in awe at all! This is extreemely easy to do with tools such as Expression Web and many others.

      When you create a new website in Expression Web you can simply import almost any website on the web. This new site will have the same folder structure and html, asp, graphics and other file types hosted at the domain. It is not much different than using windows explorer to copy files.

    If it is a WordPress site then they are known for being hacked, if they get access they can take a copy of your site theme and content very easily, takes five minutes to install it elsewhere, and this is very likely if you don't use a premium theme.

    As already pointed out, why does everyone sound amazed? Copying a site is easy. You can also scrap the content.

    Here the erring webmaster did not actually copy the site. The domain has been forwarded to the target domain with a mask. This means the domain is actually showing the original site from the target server by masking the domain name. That's why to everyone it looks like a copy. In reality, there is just one site accessed by two domain names. It is as good as the same site being accessed by www and non-www domains.

    How to tackle it? You can prevent hotlinking, but the offender is not affected at all. So send a DMCA notice and get the domain deleted or blocked.
