Not just for women but for all of us, she could be our role model in achieving our goals and getting success in our own business.

Although, I must admit it's my first time to hear Spanx.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this video. She truly rocks.

It's an awesome achievement, her company is over $1 billion and she never sold equity to outside investors.. I'm not sure about the numbers .. but she owns close to 100% of the company.

      Amen!

It's rare that someone can build a company from scratch, make it a success and still own almost 100% of its equity. I saw her product way back on TV, thought it was one of those bad products. Then I read about her in Forbes this year.

She is an inspiration indeed! For all of us, not just women!

I hope she writes an WSO soon lol

This woman is just so darn inspiring. She found a need(niche) and she supplied it. For anyone who doesn't know what spanx are, they are body shapers for women to wear underneath fitted dresses and shirts etc. They help slim and smooth your body for a more flattering look. Personally I've never worn spanx but I have seen them in every JCPenny, Kohls etc. They look a bit uncomfortable and confining to me but they sell like freaking hotcakes!

The idea behind Spanx has been there even before 'Spanx.' This woman didn't reinvent the wheel. She just 'created the need.' Look at the style of call center agents of most, if not all, sales-focused companies. You don't need an iPhone but they can give you a situation wherein you can change your mind and say, "Oh, you must be right. How much is your iPhone now?"

        • It's about feeling better about themselves.

I was in a weight-loss support group (ugh) once where the facilitator passed out copies of a sheet that had various sized silhouettes of a woman, everything from very thin to grossly obese. The idea was that one person volunteered and chose the silhouette best matching her body type (or what she thought her body type was). She didn't show it to anyone else. Then everyone else marked the silhouette they thought she best resembled. Then each person held up the result.

The volunteer invariably thought she was much thinner than everyone else thought she was. That's either a testament to the power of self-delusion or another demonstration how mean women can be to each other.

So many people I have talked to have always said "Money is the root of all evil." Notice she embraced that money is a good thing. Too many people look at alot of money as bad. Its great. I do not do this for the money first. I do it to help people but money does make life better. Living at a higher satisfaction of life is a beautiful thing. Do not deny that money is a good thing. She created her definite purpose and dedicated her life to it. She learned from the 1% elite. Every great success story has these things in common.

Money isn't the root of all evil but the love of money is.

But of course, you have made some great points in your post.

I believe "Lack of money is the root of all evil"

Love of money is a great thing.. it gives us more choices in life, the freedom to do anything we please to. It helps us buy health care, get better education, travel the world, help others, support causes we believe in and make a real difference in the world..

          It's highly subjective.

People can accomplish all of those things without having a love for money.

Financially endowed people can spawn from a sole lust to help people and the economy. The financial reward is just an a considered dividend of their efforts.

Love for money doesn't attract it.

Loving the means to the end is another matter entirely though...

I agree, having the love doesn't attract it.. but it's better to have love than hate .. if you ever want to be financially successful!

      • Body shapers existed before Spanx -- it's nothing new. Any time a privately-held company divulges numbers you should be skeptical and ask yourself what they're hoping to get out of this. My guess is she's thinking about an IPO.

As far as building a business, too many Warriors seem to be more interested in taking the easy way out and subverting existing systems to actually grow something of real value.

But what you should really take away from this is that there are people who believe that they can transform themselves into supermodels by wearing a bit of spandex and nylon. I would bet most Spanx products aren't worn more than once or twice before they're tossed in the back of the drawer.

          Fluff,

I am not sure that it is about transforming themselves into supermodels. It's about feeling better about themselves. So they take the easy route out by wearing them. They could achieve the same effect using diet and exercise, but how many people are actually willing to do the work?

So they go for the 'Shiny Button' solution. Ooh ... that sounds familiar

It's a super hot niche and she filled it nicely. I have to give her credit for that.

If you've ever caught her on Shark Tank, you will find that she comes across as very sincere and relatable to each person who pitches their product/idea. In the episodes that I've seen, she's very astute to make her offers come across as more attractive than the other "Sharks".....She knows both sides of the fence of raising capital for small business!

    Hello Brute77,

Thanks for the video- quite inspirational!

I had heard about Sara Blakely and Spanx last year - I also thought that it was quite an achievement. As I recall, she took her last $5,000, went around to several different retail companies to sell them on Spanx, and finally, one of them (can't remember - Neiman Marcus, or one of its main competitors) decided to stock them in her stores.

That's what got the ball rolling, and as they say, the rest is history.

Certainly, we all can learn from her.

    Again, thanks for the video!

    Take care,

Yeah, I've heard about Spanx and about the owner. I think one key ingredient to her success was her total belief in what she'd created. That is what we can take away. If you don't even believe in what you're selling, why would your target market take you seriously?

    Thanks for sharing this.
