Single or double opt in?

My immediate response if someone asked me this question would be 'double opt in'.

Protection from spam/permission issues, seems obvious, right?
Plus, most autoresponders require double opt in, right?

Well, I'm seeing a different flavour lately.

It seems, from what I read, the big autoresponders now allow single opt ins, and I see more posters here saying they go with single opt in as lots of people never confirm so they are losing subscribers.

Is this a shifting of the sands in the IM field, or have I missed something?

Gordon

They have allowed single opt ins for years

You have the option to turn your opt in confirmation on or off

I have been using single opt in for about 2 years now

It works much better if your using a OTO and is much more profitable generally when using
    paid traffic campaigns

I can see why that would be Paul, but doesn't it open you up to issues of people saying they never signed up?

I was always told that double opt in is the way to go. You end up with a lot less unubscribers that way

I be been using the Aweber double opt in. Well, if by double it means they imput their details then then have to confirm by clicking another link.

Seems to work fine plus you know the subscribers are actually interested.

I think double is better as it gives you much more trageted subscribers, so you won't waste money to pay for dead souls wint your autoresponder.

I've used single-opt in for over a year. I have had no problems with spam complaints or anything else. I do think it could depend on the niche you're in and what you send and the frequency you send. But you will almost certainly build a larger list, and faster.

I had a similar question this morning. I was sending out a ton of solo ads, and all I was getting was people filling out the squeeze page and never confirming. Felt I was losing out on sales, while money was going down the drain as I was only getting a few double optins and hardly any sales.

I have a solo ad going out today for 1000+ clicks, with single optin. I am going to see what happens...never done it before. Will keep you posted.

Oops, changed my mind. Got a smaller solo going out for which I shall keep the single opt in. I reckon its a bit too risky to get >1000 clicks and have a single optin, as could run the risk of spam complaints from a larger number of subscribers.

Depends on your mailing provider really.

Do they provide scrubbing of emails that hard bounce? That complain for spam?

If yes, then go for single optin. And let the mailing list manager take care about keeping your list clean.

If you're doing emailing in-house with a script - or if your mailing list manager doesn't provide list scrubbing services - then you need to go with double opt-in.

your only ever going to get complaints if you send your list garbage and treat them like idiots

    ive never had any problems

as long as you treat your list well and send them quality and relevant content they will actually be looking forward to your emails so you will have no problems

As this has been discussed several times already,
It all depends on a few factors, your Target market
    Would be the main one.
Double opt-in in my experience has been proven better
In non IM niches, single did better in IM niches.

Double opt-in ... is better esp in the big niches...as even if not immediate you at least know you have a better prospect lurking around whom you can give value and possibly make a sale down the line....

To give my honest review I never go for single optin anytime.. whether it is said by one of the famous gurus or what..

Always go for double optin because double optin are quality subscriber and very few people unsubscribe your autoresponder..

But at the end of the day you need to do testing and see what converts, whether it converts by single optin or double opt in, it is the game of testing..

    I hope this helps..

single opt ins might help in more active subscriber but again you will miss out a bit on highly targeted list here...

Love to hear back from those of you who are testing this.

I'm testing single vs double myself. It seems double is slightly more responsive, but of course I only get about 85% of the people to opt-in the second time. It's a wash.

Maybe the results would be more significant with bigger numbers...
