Thoughts on Monthly Membership Pricing

Looking for some advice from fellow warriors out there on pricing. I am getting ready to launch a video membership website that teaches a skill outside of the MMO niche. Without getting into too many specifics about the niche I will say it crosses several evergreen niches including the health and dating niche.

I am not a "professional" at what I am teaching, its just a skill i'm pretty darn good at and everyone I have demonstrated this for has told me I have serious skills.

Now, if a person were to go to school to learn these skills, even if it was a profession they had no intention of pursuing a career in, they would be paying $13,000 a year for at least 2 years to learn every skill needed (and as I said unless they wanted to pursue a career in this they don't need to learn everything). The other option is to take weekly "recreational" courses to gain this skill but that can easily cost $300 a month (at $75 a lesson). Plus it would be on the school's schedule not theirs, they would have to get there on their own, they would most likely be paired in a group with people they may not always get along with and there would be no way to stop the class and ask the teacher to repeat a step since most of the class is live demonstration.

My program is one year long (one video dripped out a week for 52 weeks), can be viewed from the comfort of ones home (looking into mobile optimization) and since it is video, the instructions can be stopped, rewound and played over and over again until the viewer understands the next step. I take the Homer Simpson approach in my videos so that anyone can understand what I'm doing.

On one hand I want this to be accessible to anyone so I originally thought somewhere in the vicinity of $27-$35 a month, but I fear for such a low price it will not be perceived as having high value. Then I thought $60 a month since that would still be cheaper than one lesson a month and the customer would be getting 4.

I know the idea number will come with testing, tracking and tweaking but I would greatly appreciate any advice offered on a good starting point. Or, honestly any thoughts in general.

Thank you in advance.

As you have 5 posts on the forum, it's going to be some time before you have credibility on your side. My advice would be to offer a free "mini series". Show people what you're all about. Give people a taste and want to then pay for more. It'll work out better for you in the long-run. Also keep in mind there are many excellent memberships on the forum in a large variety of niches at around $10-20/month. A low price won't make your product appear low-quality... but if it IS low-quality, it WILL appear that way.

I didn't get the impression that he's going to be promoting this membership to WF members.

        Lance,

While I won't be offering it directly here on the forum as its not an IM/ MMO product nor is it PLR or MRR, I will more than likely offer an affiliate program to people on the forum. I'm sure it will be a good fit for some, but certainly not for all.

Best piece of advice I've ever received... "Listen, just shut the F*#^ up and listen!" (Because there's always going to be people who have been doing what you do/ want to do for much longer. Shut up, listen to them and learn from them)

You're right, it will take some testing and tweaking to see what converts best.

My worry is that 1 video a week is going to be too little and if the niche is one that involves motivation and consistency, it might cause unsubscribes if the price or content does not suit your audience, though if you are providing plenty of value in each video with a lot to consume, you'd have every right to charge a figure based on what it's worth...maybe compare it to industry rates p/h of that profession? I guess you're the best judge of that!

Maybe an idea is to start low, get some good feedback and testimonials and then start increasing the monthly price.

Thanks for the reply Ross. I do have a mini series all set to go for anyone who opts in. It's a 4 part video series. The first video shows 5 things people do wrong in this niche, the second video shows what you truly need to remedy your situation and the final 2 are videos of actual live demos that anyone can do.

I suppose a better question would be a suggested starting price and just test, track and tweak from there.

I agree with Des Lau...start low, and build credibility first. Then slowly raise up your prices. You should also have a trial offer for the first month maybe.

I agree with starting out with a lower introductory price. In any case, whatever it is you are offering it should be of high quality.

I've been in a lot of niches outside of IM and have found that once you have a membership base in place (ballpark 300-500 paid members), rolling out a second and/or third tier with extra benefits can work well. You can then offer the new tiers to existing members at a slightly reduced price.
