I know most of you here use wordpress dot org. It's a little too complicated for me though. So which of the two would be better for a beginner like me? Blogger or wordpress dot com?

| I don't mean this rudely, but it's like comparing a Lada with a Skoda: they do both have some uses, just about, but you wouldn't really want either. ![]() If you envisage ever wanting any form of monetization at all, then forget wordpress.com, because that contravenes the terms of service, and in a way which would get your blog removed immediately a staff member notices. Blogger.com has some similar and some different problems and is also to be avoided for a business blog. A careful read of this one thread is really all you need, to see why Blogger's so unsuitable: Squidoo/Blogger as primary website but there are also 100 other threads here explaining the same thing, if you look around. The sensible thing to do is to own your own blog. You can use self-hosted Wordpress (and you can even do that on free hosting, if money's an issue - but not at wordpress.com, if you want to monetize!). Wordpress software is available free from Wordpress.org, or available as a free one-click installation on almost any proper hosting you buy/lease and pay for. (Think in terms of around $4/$5 per month for good, professional hosting). |

I'm a huge fan of Wordpress. As Alexa said, own your site... pay the $10-ish bucks a year for the domain... having control over the site itself is invaluable. Plus, when it's your own, you don't have the restrictions Wordpress imposes when they host it... such as the inability to use advertising, etc.

So if I buy a custom domain with wordpess dot com do I then own the blog? I was thinking about using blogger because its only $10 a year for a domain where as wordpress is $18.

Wordpress for main authority site. Blogger for "human spun" articles pointing back to your main one. I personally would never go back to blogger. its such a chore switching over to your own wordpress and google owns it not you. you want to be in control |

It has always been wordpress.org if you are looking for an easy to way out to have a site that you can easily edit. A lot of us use blogger but mostly for SEO purpose. I see people who uses blogger as their site as been unserious. |

If you buy and use your own domain-name instead of a wordpress.com or blogspot.com subdomain (provided free) it changes nothing else. You're still hosting there, and still subject to all their terms of service in exactly the same way as if you didn't own the domain-name. Respectfully, read the thread I linked to above - it will answer many questions for you. (Even if you did want to use your own domain name on a blog hosted at blogger.com or at wordpress.com - which would in itself be a mistake - you still shouldn't buy it through them anyway. It never pays to register a domain where you're hosting the site. You can buy a domain-name at any registrar and either redirect or domain-map it to your blog). | |

this is a funny thread lol, wordpress is best, no blogger is best, no wait put it on your own site. What no one is saying to you is the truth you can lose your wonderful site on your domain just as easily as a blogger blog. People forget to backup their blogs much less want to admit what it takes to learn these things. And big shots always say things like oh me I backup every day. IMHO start with a blogger blog make some money and learn what you need to do for a blog on your site, the backup process what it takes, and what you need to do to set up a wordpress site on a domain. There are plenty of wordpress video tutorials online. If you spend all your time learning how to put wordpress on a domain now you will not get anywhere. Choose a nice longtail keyword for your blogname at blogger. I recommend getting a copy of keyword xp it was a wso but it had resell rights. It will do all the work for you of getting the best longtail keywords from a seed keyword i.e. make money. And then get busy writing some articles and reviews and targeting desperate keywords and products things people need now, tell the problem on your blog and let your product be the solution. Good luck thats the plan IMHO don't think you need a domain name to make some money blogger subdomains rank just fine if you follow the instructions. Dont try to put the cart before the horse. You need to study domain names as well. Do you want an exact keyword domain name, do you want a niche related domain name? Which is best for you? Believe me I have had my share of jumping in the water too quick it is never a good idea. |

It have taken in all the replies above, but I have something to add. I use Wordpress.com to built my sites, however, my latest one which is (trying) to promote Amazon products, does not work. I am told it does not accept Amazon links and HTML. So where should you go to promote an Amazon site??

Initially you will feel it's a lot to learn , but this os one skill you will resue even after you start outsourcing to hanve a handle on your core business which will be your websites.. so take a week , learn it and use your own hosting with wordpress , thats the only way to go blogger , etc are good for extra backlinking power but not as the main place to start your biz. |

Get your own hosting and put wordpress on it. That's the only sensible way to go if you are in it for the long haul. If you are strapped for cash, then yes make a little money with a blogger or wordpress and then use this to buy hosting for your own site. But don't get overly reliant on them or one day you may wake up to find your account deleted and your source of cash flow gone. |

outsourcing is a good idea but I concur you must know what you are going to do and what you like doing too. Re the backlinks idea absolutely once you do get your wordpress up on a domain thats a great way to get visitors. Quote:

Wordpress is definitely better than Blogger. However, if you are going to use free hosting as Alexa suggested, you might need to learn how to install Wordpress manually. You will need to download the Wordpress installation archive from Wordpress.org and then upload it to your web host's server. However, I've used two hosting services that have the Fantastico installer, meaning you don't have to install Wordpress manually. They are Byet Host and 000webhost. I prefer Byet Host because your account gets activated instantly. If you need a free domain, you can get a .co.cc or a .cu.cc. However, I still recommend paying for your domain name and web hosting. |

There is some great advice here and to echo Alexa: read the thread. If you have absolutely zero money...you could start out with either one. I still have a blogger blog I created a number of years ago that brings in a small amount of income every month... I have it monetized through Amazon, and a blogger group pays me money every month for displaying their logo. However: while you do own your content, you are basically at the mercy of Google or Blogger. Say something they don't like or violate their TOS and poof: all of your hard work is gone gone gone... Save up your nickles and dimes and get a hosting account for $5.00 per month and register your own domain...it really is the best way. You need to host your word press blog on your own domain. That needs to be your goal... |

I registered an $18 domain on Wordpress.com and then unknowingly started some advertising on it. They took my site off the internet. I did blogger to start with, but shortly realized that it was not working with my business. Wordpress.org is the way to go, if you are serious about your business. It's a snap to use after you get the hang of it. You can also spend some time time looking for free themes. I finally went with Optimize Press and now I'm satisfied with the turn out of my blogging. Hope this helps. |

Ofcourse in blogger, both of them are easy to manage but blogger might not priority for long term . You use a blog to earn money, you need to have a well site like wordpress which lot of professional theme and plug in available to make your blog more user friendly, professional and easy to integrate with readers. Beside that you might get a domain name for your wordpress. You can find lot of profitable and expert blogger are using wordpress right now. |

Surely, WordPress. Get a paid WP .com domain. It's much better and also very easy to work with. Trust me, WP is not complicated at all. For SEO, it is also better. Hope that helps. You can learn WP very quick, so no need to practice on a free domain.

For beginners blogger is the best option to choose. Bcoz it is user friendly site to create any blog and you can use custom domain to get your own domain too. Wordpress have many extra options , even though it is little complicated than blogger. SO it is better to go with blogger , if you dont have any knowledge on wordpress. |

Go with wordpress, then stay on top of your forum discussions for questions on how to to set it up the way you want. You probably will have to eventually pay someone to get your site the way you want it, but I have a wordpress website that ranks for a pretty competitive keyword. If you don't no CSS or HTML (which I'm guessing you don't), you won't find it as "easily customizable" as people say it is.

There were so many mistaken assumptions and misguided beliefs expressed in this thread that I thought you might well end up badly advised, here (which would have been a great shame, as well as pretty frustrating for those of us who've already made all those mistakes in the past and paid the price!). Alexa to the rescue as usual. She really knows her stuff and got this spot on. I agree if you want to be taken seriously you need to self host your site. You need a good name and you need to start doing backlinking and SEO for you site to build it up with time. Traffic is a different thing you "can" get traffic even if your SEO is not so good but good SEO and traffic is the best. Good luck. |

If you are just starting out, blogger is great for cutting your teeth into the blogging game. You have a relatively risk-free platform you can use to experiment with text, ads, building relationships, building brands, etc. However, once you decide to get SERIOUS about making money with your blog, Wordpress is the way to go. Why? It is easier to sell. It is also easier to get paid for backlinks. People will take you more seriously when it comes to A>B>C trades. These are just the OBVIOUS benefits. There are many more. |

| Again, there's a difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. Why anyone would ever want to go with .com is beyond me. A self-hosted wordpress blog is the only way to go. You can sign up for hostgator at $4 a month and install wordpress through your cpanel. As far as the domain, I'm not sure where you're looking at buying it because the price shouldn't change based on what you do with it. Godaddy .com's are $7.95 regardless.
