Have my eye on a domain (market price was $2K)

Have an idea for a website, it's been brewing in my mind for over a year now. It's not a niche, it's a huge market. I know it will take time to build it up bit by bit. There are currently two players that are doing the same thing, albeit a bit badly. I came up with the name doing a bit of brainstorming myself and checked and it was taken. Should I forget about this domain and move on and come up with another name for the website or should I pursue it and buy it?

Owner of the domain said he will accept nothing under $2K for it. I have however got him down to $1400. How can I tell if this is a good price for this domain? How can I get him down further and further. Really want this domain for my site.

A huge market? I think is better a niche if you want to earn affiliate commisions, and I wouldn't pay anything for that domain

    My 2 cents

No its not a website that I am going to use affilliates with. Its an info site country and region specific.

By the way the .net .org and .co are available.

I read that if you are looking to dominate eventually then a .com is the ultimate way to go. In fairness who dominates an industry or market with a .net or .org address

Well if you really want to develop a site with that domain that prize isn't very high, because if you built a site with that domain and supposing a time later you want to sell it, would have good value since will have some backlinks that high its value

So, in my opinion if you like it very much and are convinced of that, buy it as low as you could agree with the owner

And yes, nothing better than a .com for most of cases

Suppose I could start with a .co or .net and if its as good as I think it will be then buy the .com domain. Could be a better option than spending $1K+ at the start.

I could be wrong but I think is not a good idea at all starting with a .net or other and after a time to suitch to a .com, because you will lose the backlinks, and also maybe the owner could high his prize if noted you have already a site

But first what kind of informative site do you have in mind?

Maybe we could suggest you other domain ideas so you don't spend that amount since you are insecure

How much are you willing to pay for it (don't need to answer that in public here)?

Are you willing to walk away from that domain and go on to a 'Plan B' domain?

Never negotiate from a position of weakness (i.e. don't let the owner know how bad you really want the domain).

I'd say if you're SO sure about the potential in the market, and if you think you have a real winner with that domain, try to bargain as much as possible, and get it.

The only thing you should be worried about really is how quick you're gonna make your investment back (cause that's what your $1400 for the domain would be), and if you trust yourself enough on this, I'd say go for it.

Oh, and make sure you use an escrow service to make the payment. You don't want anyone to run away with that kind of money ; )

I am definitely sure about the potential.

I am just unsure at what rate I can spend time and money on the site getting it developed etc.

Oh what to do, what to do.

Well, in that case, why not first develop the site on the .net version and if it lives up to the potential, you can simply buy the .com at whatever price (you should be able to easily afford it later on), and point it to the .net or move everything to .com (might take some planning, but not too difficult to do).

Yeah its prob the best way to do it. I do believe in it but I would rather invest little and watch it grow rather than invest lots to begin with and then play catch up. Would I lose all of the backlinks though if I switched it over to .com?

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Trev81, start with the .com or nothing, always the best is starting from the beginning with definitive things as possible, but if you buy it, follow the Varnita advice on the payment throw escrow, or sedo or godaddy

But my advice is think more about other alternative proyect cheaper and quit this for now, when I wanted my first domains I found with were all taken, but I kept thinking and found good alternatives which I'm very happy

No, you wouldn't lose your backlinks if you do a 301 redirect.
