What do you tell people that don't get it?

If you're here, you have some sorta of business online. I'm a copywriter and do my business online. And I've come across so many people that just don't get what it is I do and how I do it.

I'm sure you all get this too.

So, what do you do? What do you say to them? If you ever get disheartened by remarks, what do you do?

My friends and family are determined to think that what I do is too complicated for them to understand.

    I just say I'm a writer now...

Well, as a copywriter I would guess that your goal is to increase a client's sales and conversions by writing or tweaking sales copy? Well, that what I think a copywriters job is. To get me more sales of my infoproduct. So maybe you can say you're like an ad writer?

I don't mean job description, I mean how does it make you feel and how do you handle that reaction.

    I don't get disheartened.

I used to have a landlord, who's stuck in the 1950s and told me I was a worthless American because I didn't work in a factory like all young men (I was 18 at the time) should. Well guess what? I'm 24, she's still stuck in the past and still hates me because I've been following my dream.

You will NEVER convince the people who are disheartened by what you do. Even if you show them proof of success, they just shrug it off and say something along the lines of, "yeah? Well at least I work for my living."

Some people will just simply never understand what we do or why we do it.

Tell them, you are an online business owner. If you're an affiliate marketer, tell them you are an online marketer. Saying "I Make Money Online" to them means, "oh, so you're lazy and spend all day on the computer? Oh, ok." Telling someone you run a business tells a different story.

These are 'dis-empowering questions'... I'm pretty sure I got this concept off Tony Robbins (but not 100% sure).

Basically they will ask questions (often in a passive aggressive style) to create doubt in your mind. I am sure they know exactly what you are doing.

Say something like: "I help people sell products through my writing" and leave it at that.

Don't let it get to you.

    Nadia,

I can definitely relate to what you are asking. Sometimes those closest to us seem to want to dissect every part of our job because it is not considered "traditional".

I usually just keep my responses short and to the point. For example, you are a copywriter, so you simply say that. When they want to pry into the details in an invasive manner, you can gently explain to them that you do not pry into every detail of their life and would appreciate the same courtesy in return.

I do understand the feeling of being disheartened by the remarks of other people, but just try to keep in mind that only you know what is the best path for you to take in life. Make sure that you do not judge or criticize what other people do and learn to expect the same in return. There will always be people who seem negative about everything. Hold your head up high and exude confidence in everything that you do. If you do this, you will find that the comments either cease, or they begin to not bother you.

I hope this helps a little! Have fun with your job!
