How's this for VIRAL, - over 1M visits within a few days

Whatever one's political opinions, this little gem has taken many people by surprise.

A little, three minute speech that within a few days, has had over 1 million views.
Quite Stunning.

Now think from a marketing perspective for a moment. Why do you think that this three minute little speech has spread like wildfire??

Daniel Hannan and the Viral Video

So, why was this such a success?

Concise, eloquent and seemingly accurate in the figures he gives, its a good speech.

Although he has his own blog at the telegraph and has been a journalist for them for 14 years I think. So he does have some "leverage" from that.

Mmmm Maybe he did get some leverage from the Telegraph blog but that could only account for a few thousand views. Check Hannan's other Youtube videos. Nowhere NEAR the kind of coverage this recent video got (currrently 1,060,418 views).

So ..... what makes this kind of thing viral? and secondly what lessons do you draw from it for your own business .

      Leonard,

I think it went viral because across the world
people are sick and tired politicians that think
that they can spend, spend, spend and just
raise taxes or print more money.

In the USA 40% of the population is supporting
100% of the people. What that means is 60%
of the population is getting some form of a
      government check.

What's really interesting is our nations founders
understood that, that's why "back in the day"
if you didn't pay taxes you couldn't vote.

So again I think it went viral because we love
to hear somebody with some common sense
      tell it like it is.

I agree - and by the way he was the one in charge of the "Clinton years" balanced budget - not Clinton.

I just wish he would make more of an effort at getting camera time now days.

People love the underdog! I wonder how Obama would react if someone in his town hall meetings were given the opportunity to speak out against his spending policy in such a manner. Any product that resonates with public opinion will go viral fer sure.

    Ahem...

Despite the fact that the discourse is full of BS highlighting a completely prepared, created and propagandized "economy crash" the orator is eloquent indeed.

Look, numbers are numbers, let's take just the initial 700 billions (it's more than that now) US gov gave to the *poor* corps that "crashed US economy", only that amount not counting anything else "being done" by other govs in other countries "trying to save the world to collapse", and divide this amount to each and every inhabitant of this world, then everyone would be several times millionaires and gone would be the economy problems and even poverty. It's as simple as that believe or not...

Duh!! There might something wrong, hidden then...

    Regards,

      Netman,

Your math may be off just a bit.

      The worlds population is,
      6,706,993,152

That would be almost 7 billion people, if everyone got
$100 that would equal 700 billion.

Not that any of that had to do with Leonard's
      question.

Mmmm Yes . I'm not making a judgement on the substance of Hannan's argument. (I happen to believe he is right)

I'm more interested in this context as to what made it go viral and what lessons can be learnt

Still not quite sure I understand the philosophy of sending the US taxpayers 's $$$ to all the globes inhabitants? Enough of that already going on via the UN.

$700 B / 302 M us population = ? My computer's calculator shows $2,317 each. Now if we narrowed that to just the 40% US Pop who actually PAID Taxes - wonder what we'd have in our stimulus checks?

          Hey Steve,

It was Netman's idea to give it to the world.
          not mine.

However wasn't it Senator Ron Paul,
that said if the US just quit sending out
checks to all of the foreign govs we wouldn't
          have a financial problem?

LOL it was a mistake indeed I forgot a few things in the equation...

Nevertheless, the principle remains the same, we could recalculate the now in the trillions amount (like I said the initial publicly known 700B is way over now, and it will not stay there, as much as it's not the first amount distributed this way) and redistribute the money to the people instead. Rinse and apply the same principle in all countries...

            Cheers

I think that's part of the problem. People think that corporations are some rich jerk somewhere collecting money. Corporations are are made of many people. People that will only collect money and stay employed, if the corporation does well. In my opinion, a corporation should not pay taxes at all. Let every employee pay income taxes. Then when the corporation does well, more taxes are collected through normal income taxes.

The biggest reason it went viral is simply this:

              It makes people *feel good*.

In that sense it's no different than the giggling baby or loveable lion viral videos.

In this case, it makes people *feel good* to hear someone articulate well what they themselves believe, but may not be able to articulate as well.

In this case it has the side benefit of making them *feel good* because the general media are Leftists, and when this guy's articulate rant (which I completely agree with, as a side not) resonates, they want to spread the word as their little cry in the Leftist wilderness, hoping against hope that it will become a BIG cry, but *feeling good* about the message anyways.

Bottom line: If you want a video to go viral, make SOMEBODY *feel good*.

In response to what you said Leonard, its hard to say.

The content resonates with people, I still feel his profile and contacts list may have been a big help for him.

The topic is also a hot one. The whole British nation has wanted to say to PM gordron Brown all the things Hannan said.

Probably because conservative commentators were seen as anything BUT lucid.
Most US based conservatives are still licking their wounds. In this case, a Brit
is VERY lucid and seems to have struck a chord

I think it was getting onto Drudge Report that gave it the viral "kick", and lots of journalists - the "sneezers" to use Seth Godin's language - probably check out Drudge on a regular basis.

After that, the video was partially played on Fox News with Glenn Beck and Hannity, among others - who had probably discovered it from Drudge.

Finally, it got spread around the blogosphere and political forums, particularly the ones that agree with him.

I think what gave it viral quality was the message itself, which obviously resonated with a lot of people.

I think it "took off" so well because people Want to hear the TRUTH about how their money is spent by their government.
Also, people have a tendency to want to blame someone, so this speech fits the bill.

Here's another similar example for those interested:
How about a 6½ minute YouTube Video with almost 1.2 Million Views ???

My observations as to why it went viral:

    1. Hypnotic speech and tone
    2. Extremely relevant to the times
    3. A voice for the frustrated public
    4. Media outlets jumped on the bandwagon
    5. It stirs up controversy
    6. Intangible factors (i.e. luck)

Whether you agree with the guy or not, these observations as to why it went viral would be true to any product, service, or offering.

Those are my ideas at least!

Yes - those seem to me to be some of the clearest indications of why it went viral.

NOW - lets take these and ask, how do we translate each of these into the business world.
