Confused on the Terms on How to Use Images for Websites, ebooks and presentations?

Hello Folks,
I was recommended Istockphoto for buying images for my video presentations. I went to the website and it looks really good.

However I have a few questions in this regard.

1. There are options like X-small, Small, Medium etc, but they don't give a visual configuration of how small the small is and how large the large is though they mention the dimensions. For those of you who have purchased, would small images suffice?

2. Can I use the same image that I buy from Istock for my ebook, salespage and video presentations or would I have to pay for every use of the image? I am confused by the terms and conditions of use.

3. What are the other cheap options for buying images? Do you recommend anyone's services either here at Warrior Forums or somewhere else who can do a good job of working on images without me worrying about the copyright and legal headaches?

Thanks,
Dan

If you want a visual representation, use your graphics program to create blank images in the various dimensions. That should help you determine what size of an image you'll need for your projects.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Check the legal page at istockphoto. It says you cannot use their images on products intended for resale (ebooks) unless you get an extended license. I use Stock Photography Images at Can Stock Photo often because it explicitly states you can use their images for things like ebooks.

Thanks Mike. Do you have any more sites that you recommend? It is so easy to miss out on this legalities, I mean I was under the impression I could buy pictures from istock and use it on ebooks. I thank you for bringing that to my notice.

      Thanks,

I had someone in a class I run ask essentially the same question aobut using istockphotos in ebooks. I called them and "Lisa" told me it was okay to use their images in ebooks if the photos are not the main content of the book. For example, you can not publish a clip art book consisting of istock images. I would call them (haven't got the number handy but it's on their site. So, the way I understand it now is that it is fine.
