Best web analytics service?

I was told that to solve my website's signup problems I need to first determine the keywords people are entering my site from. I am currently using Statcounter. Is that a good one? Is there a better one?

Thank you for any advice you have.

I'd go with Google Analytics. It provides you with lots of info. The code is also easy to install.

    Good luck,

Thanks, I will have a look at that now. I'll get back to you on here with how it goes or if I get stuck on installing it.

Oh my god this is confusing. It has a million options. I don't know how I'm supposed to do this. It has analysis tools {I'm thinking this one?} content analytics, conversion analytics, advertising analytics, this is dizzying.

    What do you use?

There's no "best", as it is too subjective.

    Some options to try are:

    1. Google Analytics/Google Webmaster Tools
    2. Piwik
    3. Clicky
    4. Open Web Analytics

Also keep in mind that your web hosting most likely has awstats available from your cPanel.

Here's where to find the searches people made to find your site in Google Analytics:

I use W3Counter for web stats instead. It's easier to use and every report updates in real-time.

Nothing wrong with StatCounter which you already had. I'm sure it has a search report too. The only issue is that StatCounter only tells you about the last 500 page views of your site, which is very little, unless you pay them to upgrade.

I'd begin with first placing the Google analytics code on your site and take it from there.

Just that code will let you know where your traffic comes from, how long it stays on your site (bounce rate) and which keywords they used to get to your site.

The advanced options are really nice, but not always necessary. Track your traffic & see what you find : )

My god thank you so much guys. Statcounter has the problem of quickly losing my results so I only ever see what's been to my site in the past few minutes.

I'm going to try and piece this one together and get it working on my site

I'm checking out that first link given to me and I clicked on how to learn more and I don't see anywhere about where to get the code or how to apply it on my site. I don't want Premium {that implies having to pay money} and I don't know what the Gallery is. I just want something to read my site's stats by.

I'm so sorry, I'm pretty stupid about all this.

    I'm on this page. http://www.google.com/analytics/features/index.html

    Stuck as hell.

Google analytics is the clear winner when it comes to analytics data for your website.

You will get detailed reports for many different stats, so you can clearly see what is going on with your website and what you can do to improve it.

Why do you think GA is a clear winner out of interest?

I am not yet allowed to post a link. So instead of giving you the direct URL, I want you to go to Google and type the following search term:
    "how to setup google analytics"

There you'll get plenty of option. You need to download the pdf of
    Google Analytics Guide
    .

That PDF will explain everything about Google analytics that how to install it, how to maintain it, etc.

I hope now you can figure it by yourself.

Web analytics reveal that hits to my site come almost exclusively from 3 or 4 similar keywords: "warrior cats rpg," "wcrpg" and other warrior cats related terms. Google Image search results are the most common, but I think that the site is logging Google's image page displays as a hit rather than actual clicks through to the site from the images.

thanks to you guys for sticking with me on this.

The number of keywords being used to find my site is a lot narrower than I thought.

If you are actively doing SEO, don't go with Google Analytics for safety reasons. Not very smart to give that much information to google (such as your bounce rate).

I'd go with Statcounter/Clicky and crazyegg

    warm regards,
    Mike

You do have a point. I guess it really depends on the SEO your doing. I've done my SEO with GA and it has done nothing but help my rankings, but then again if your doing some blackhat stuff, better probably not to use Google.

Try clicky, it's much easier to use in my opinion.. I'm a real nerd when it comes to tech.. sometimes, even google analytics confuse me.. I use clicky, it's best for nerds like me.

I would go with a tool called RankVision.com. It has 18 different built in modules, keeps record of the ranking of the different keywords you want to rank, it has a built in traffic counter, country blocking system, and lots of security/safety modules. Very good tool.

So the way I understand it is from your posts is at 1:22 you said you would give it a try and then get back to us.

Then at 1:25 you responded that it is so confusing. So in 3 minutes you signed up for the account, installed it, had it verified, then looked at the interface and decided that it was confusing.

What do you really want other than a link to your website

I am not sure that I follow you. If you want to see my website to analyse what could be wrong with it etc. the link is in my signature. I didn't mention that because I didn't think that at this point it would be useful, since we are talking about analytics rather than site critiques.

I've been away from this thread because I have been working on finishing another project to add to my site. That's done, so I've come back here.

Statcounter is good if you decide to upgrade. Then you'll be able to look at historical data dated months ago. Google Analytics is a great alternative.
