I have often thought of doing this when I find time to do it on my list of things to do.

I think you can modify the 404 page in your cpanel

Its suppose to be a standard html page that gets called

Put anything up and test it out

a offer, a squeeze page etc...

If folks like Hostgator are sticking their offers up on them, what does that tell you?

If you want to modify your 404 page, just login to your cpanel. Look for the error pages icon. click on that. Usually located on the 3rd row, 1st column. Look for the 404 (wrong page). You can now modify that page. Save it and check your new 404 wrong page

In Wordpress just go to your theme editor and change the 404 page. For static sites go to cpanel. They are listed in there under error pages.

Weather it brings in traffic or not you should be getting the interest instead of your host don't you think.

Here's the best and the easiest way to make your error page work for you 9 times out of 10.

#1, doll up your page ANY way you want it to look in your favorite page maker. Save it as 404.shtml and upload it to the same level your front page (index or default) is on.

http://www.talewins.com/404.shtml will show you how I have set this up to look

One thing I do want to caution you a caution on is (if you have more than one level (http://www.talewins.com/pain/master/piledon.htm) that your links must be complete, as if you were directing traffic completely off your site. No in site references -- like ( a href:"../pain/master.htm") Links should be (a href:"http://www.talewins.com/images/seldom/master.htm"

Here is also an idea for a custom 404 page with search function:

Custom Search | Thought Search Articles

The idea is to encourage those visitor to stay.

Most likely they are searching for something specific, and will be turned off by an immediate page full of ads.

Give them something useful at first, then ease them into your site and offers.

  • Sure, 404 error pages are worth monetizing but only if you have a tremendous amount of traffic. If you're only getting a couple dozen hits a day, customizing your 404 pages is probably not worth the time.

Then again, customization only takes minutes to do so if you have the time to spare, go for it.
