How to create landing page?

I have some questions regarding the actual creation of a landing page. I've done a lot of research..google and so on.

I've found there are tons of options including unbounce, optimizely, wordpress premise, or outsourcing on odesk/elance, etc.

I'm assuming there are several factors that influence the decision...like cost, etc.

I don't want spend $40 a month on unbounce even though it's supposedly easy to use. I'm thinking of outsourcing the design on odesk and then have someone code it from there.

And that leads to another question...I'm assuming it has to be coded and you can't just put an image there because you want an email form on the page to capture email addresses.

I think this may get expensive tho if I want to start tweaking the design of the page and have to outsource everytime....

So, what's a good solution? What do you use?

BTW, the purpose of the landing page is gauge interest of an idea I have for a site. I'm going to try driving traffic via twitter, facebook ads (possibly), pinterest, organic search (this is the reason I think it has to be coded).

Thanks all

I grew up when it was all up to you to put up a landing page or a squeeze page to determine interest. So I learned in an html editor. But, Optimize Press and Affilotheme are both Wordpress themes that have squeeze pages built in. You choose the format/layout you want to use, insert images, optin box and video - or any combination of those and press publish. Very easy.

Yea, I've heard of those...I didn't know they produce the same type of looking landing pages as some of the services. I'll look into that today.
    Thanks

    OptimizePress is the best.

I suggest you use a simple squeeze page, it can collect leads, and help you build a list.

Thanks for all the input...I've never used optimize press so bear with me...

I know the typical sales letter and squeeze page you can make with it but can it make something similar to these types of landing pages?

What do you mean by "landing page"?

I suspect you might mean "squeeze page" or "sales page" but I'm not sure which?

Maybe a little clarification will help?

A landing page is simply the page on which your traffic lands - it can be absolutely any kind of page you like: a content-rich page, an article, a squeeze page, a non-squeeze-page opt-in, a sales page, a contents page, a blog home page ... whatever you like. It's your site and you get to choose. You can even have different landing pages on the same website, and direct traffic from different sources to each.

A squeeze page is a short page with a prominently incentivized opt-in (the incentivization is traditionally done with short, "salesy" text with a few bullet-points, but it doesn't have to be, and these days there are "video squeeze pages" too) and NO other content. If there are other contents/options/links, too, then it isn't a "squeeze page", by definition.

A sales page is a (typically longer) page which similarly presents the visitor with one option - to buy something. (It can occasionally have a choice of things to buy, or a choice of ways to buy them, but that's the principle, anyway).

Well, it's not a sales page because I don't have a product yet. Not sure if it would be considered a squeeze page.

I basically have an idea for a site and I want to gauge interest. I will drive traffic to the site with different types of media. I basically want it to be a one page site with an email opt-in form. The site would include logo, benefits for the potential user, what the site does, etc. I would like it to have very nice graphics like a couple of the pages I posted in an earlier post.
The point of gathering the emails is to pry the audience for feedback and see if I should actually go forward with hiring a developer and so on. If I see there is a market I would add incentives to sign up early.
The page would clearly say somewhere "coming soon" or something along those lines.
And I'm just looking for a graphically nice way to present it...I don't want it to be a long sales letter.

What is the objective of the site actually? If you have an opt in form and giving away incentives, then you are clearly list building which may serve many purposes depending on your objective.

Making a landing page to find a market is not usually done. It's rather the opposite. You find a market first, know the audience well, then you select your business model and then you select the type of landing page accordingly.

Example: if your site is adsense based and you buy traffic with PPC, the whole project is already doomed.

So, know the market well and see what they like. Sell them what they want to buy and from which type of site they like to buy.

      Hope that helps.

That's my plan. I want to keep it simple and get across what the site will be.

I think I know the market and I'm pretty sure the market wants this site but I want to get it across to more people to verify. I also know the business model. I want to highlight the business and site that will be coming and see if I can get people to pre-sign up. The reason for this is the development of the site will be more costly than just setting up a simple wordpress site so I want to have a good idea before I go and spend more than a couple hundred dollars on development.

A simple wordpress site with an email capture seems to be the best way to go. You don't have to spend much and it'll provide a basic (or complicated if you want) site to get your message out.

If you don't want to do it yourself someone on vworker or odesk could set it up for less than 50 usd
