Still Using Odesk For Article Writing?

In the past I used Odesk for article writing and I was getting 1000 word articles for $7. They all passed copyscape, no grammar errors and great content flow. When people say get quality articles and some pay $20 an article. What is everybody using for an article service?

Thanks

hmmm, $20 for a 1000 word article? Seems pretty steep. I still use Odesk as well. Every so often I will use 99centarticles but there has been a couple times where it took a little longer than what I cared for.

Writing articles yourself is the best way to get traffic. My personal experience-no one else knows the niche more than you.

      Think about it..

You really have lead a sheltered life ... I'd say $100 for a 1000 word article is a reasonable starting point.

oDesk is the best and most user friendly outsourcing site I've ever worked, Elance and iWriter are better alternative after oDesk.

I guess it depends on the quality of work you want done. Do you want "just good enough"? Or do you want professional, high quality content that brings people back again and again?
There are many that wouldn't even write a title for $7, much less a 1000 word article.

This is spot on. If you don't ask for a market wage as a writer, you won't get one. It never fails to amaze me to hear that people expect a professional service to be provided at rates below minimum wage, such as $2 and $3 for 500 words of content. Or to hear about the frustrations of writers who work for content mills like iWriter, Textbroker, and the like.

I just wrote a 750 word article critique for a client for $50, and I did it for that low of a price because he is a long term acquaintance and learning to be a better writer. For a commercial client, it would have been $80. I have had people actually laugh at my fees. I don't mind that one bit. I know that the money in writing SEO content doesn't generally come from individuals in the IM game as much as it comes from small and medium sized business that have the funds to pay my fees, and understand that professional content does not come at $0.45 a paragraph.

If you are good writer, you are better off promoting yourself instead and not writing for content mills. Get some samples together and get the word out. It takes time to build it up, like any online venture. Stick to your guns and charge a market wage for the content you are capable of creating.

    John,

Jason (JaRyCu) has pointed you to the right direction.
Let me add more textual representation to that pretty image he posted. LOL
Here are the steps you need to do to find writers from the Warriors For Hire section.
    1. Visit Warriors For Hire.
    2. Scroll down to the very bottom. Find the 'Display Options' area.
    3. On the "PREFIX" dropdown list, select "CONTENT."
    4. Click the "SHOW THREADS" button. That's it. All the providers of content writing services will appear, for which we're one of them.

Although I understand you might be on a tight budget, or perhaps you've been used to paying peanuts and you luckily didn't get monkeys, it is always good to have a due diligence in deciding whose content writing service you will use.

Every Warrior can always recommend whoever is the 'best' provider of writing services, at least, based on their personal experience. Having said that, their definition of 'best' is based on their taste, their passing score when it comes to gauging quality, and other factors are solely based on whoever is giving you an advice. You got to experience the content provider's service on your own so the superlative 'best' is tailored to your own taste and level of satisfaction.

I don't use any other service than oDesk.
It does take some time to find quality writers but when you do, you stick with them.

    Hi Guys.

I have used eLance all the time to find writers but I am going to try oDesk. eLance has been great, but I have some lower priced work to farm out too.

One thing that really confuses me though.

On eLance I can post a fixed fee project and select a budget of say <$500. Under $500. So I might get proposals ranging from $50 to $500.

On Odesk it looks like I have to put a specific fixed fee budget (Sure there is an hourly rate option too)

So I tried posting a job for $100. Guess What. All the proposals came in at $100......

I would prefer that contractors put the price that they want.......rather than what I suggested. As this job I expected would be about $50 Very simple job.

I'm sure there must be a smarterr way of stating the budget on ODesk and i am just missing it. I would appreciate some tips........

Otherwise I'll just have to stick with eLance :-(

I have had best luck with elance and warrior for hire section.

It will take a while for you to find the right writers for you niche, but when you do...

    1) Treat them well

    2) Offer them bonuses for good work.

These will pay off in the end big time!!

Yes I have been using eLance for a few years now and have a great team of writers on there.

Just thought I would try ODesk when I needed lower quality / cheaper work done.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7350170].message }}
  • Though oDesk mostly does not pay high for articles because there are a lot of contractors available who are ready to provide good quality articles within a very low price. Especially contractors from Philippines.

    Hi Toplink,

This so true as we also get projects from oDesk. There's still one thing you can do to inform all applicants about your expectations on their bids. You may add this in your advertisement:
"I prefer quality but budget-friendly type of work. In your cover letter, please mention your fixed rate per word or per 100 words so I will come to know the breakdown of your total bid price. Please mention your total/final bid price according to your level of expertise."

You know, as a contractor, it's always the first impulse to maximize the budget indicated on the employer's oDesk job post. But in our case, we always show a breakdown of our bid in our cover letter. So if your budget for that project is $100.00, we itemize everything in our cover letter. Now, if we feel that your indicated budget is insufficient, based on the details of your advertisement, we will also mention that on our cover letter. If we feel your budget is way too much for the simple things you need us to write, we mention that, too.

I guess it all boils down to how specific your qualifying questions are on your oDesk job post. Yes, a lot of contractors hate to bid on job posts that are very long, that require this and that, yadiyadiyada, but that's how you can truly filter the good apples from the bad ones. If I were an employer in oDesk, I'd rather receive 2 to 5 bids on my detail-oriented job posts than receiving 50 bids from people who are just copying and pasting their entire cover letter without even putting an acknowledgement statement on the first paragraph of their letter.

I used Odesk to write 6 x 800 word articles which I then compiled into ebooks and published on Kindle. The articles were terrible quality (paid $8 per article) but I re-worded the basic content to suit my style and it didn't take long at all.

    Depends what your purpose is...

Odesk is suitable for some but not for others

I also agree... if you just plan to use the articles to post somewhere, you can hire someone from oDesk to write 1000-word article for $7-10.. but if it is for your main page or your page's blog... then it is best if you will get someone who can write better articles, but of course, expect that their fees are higher than $20.

Quality and style are two different species. We may have the best quality processes in the entire creation of God but we may also not be able to write according to your style.

Style has something to do with personality. Your and your writer's style may be somewhat, but not totally, similar.

So I'd like to remind everyone, not that I'm promoting or something (I don't mind wherever you bring your content writing needs), that we (including us) should not expect any writer to meet our own style in writing. We can express our style by writing some instructions and attaching some articles you wrote on your own but writers can only do so much.

Odesk is suitable for some but not for others
I agree to a certain degree. There's no such specific, definite, or fixed place where we can find the best work we need. Whether it's in the Warrior Forum, oDesk, Elance, Freelancer, Mars, Pluto, Jupiter, Uranus or in the Sun (yeah, "in" and not "on"), it always takes due diligence to interview, know, assess, and test any contractor before you place the biggest order in your entire life. If the writer's reviews/testimonials, portfolio, and quality control processes aren't enough to convince yourself that they're what you need, place a small order. Take note, it's a small order you need to pay for. I'm putting an emphasis on this because (this is not a rant, however) some Warriors are trying to change the etymological meaning of a "review copy" into a "freebie." These two are homonyms but not synonyms.

I really like iWriter right now. The articles are super cheap, I use them as articles on my site, but I don't use them on my main page.
